Overview
Assistant/Associate Professor of Watershed Management and Hydrology — full-time, tenure-track faculty position starting August 17, 2026, in the Natural Resources Management and Environmental Sciences Department (NRES) at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. Location: Central California, San Luis Obispo.
Responsibilities
Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in watershed management and hydrology, with emphasis on surface hydrology, watershed assessment, riparian ecology, watershed and stream restoration, soil erosion control, stormwater, and stream ecology.
Develop and deliver courses supporting the undergraduate majors in Forestry and Fire Science, Earth and Soil Science, and Environmental Protection and Management; contribute to curriculum enhancement and scholarly activities as needed.
Engage in applied, externally funded research involving undergraduate and graduate students and key stakeholders; mentor students and collaborate in multidisciplinary settings.
Collaborate with forest industry, environmental consulting, agricultural sectors, and other stakeholders; leverage Cal Poly’s Swanton Pacific Ranch to strengthen education and scholarship and industry partnerships.
Contribute to the department’s teaching, research, and service missions; participate in service activities and faculty governance as appropriate.
Qualifications
Required: Doctorate focused on watershed science, wildland hydrology, surface hydrology, or related field by start date (ABD considered if degree awarded prior to start); demonstrated excellence in teaching and communication; ability to develop an externally funded, applied research program; commitment to student-centered learning; ability to work in multidisciplinary teams; excellent written and oral English communication.
Preferred Qualifications
Strong record of teaching and research; ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students; experience collaborating with forest industry, public forest managers, environmental consulting, agricultural industry, state agencies, and NGOs.
Productive record of teaching, scholarship, and student-involved research; experience with diverse populations and fostering an inclusive environment.
Special Conditions
Mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act; compliance with CSU Executive Order 1083.
Background check required after conditional offer of employment; completion satisfactory before start date.
On-campus presence required for tenure-line faculty; CSU Out-of-State Employment Policy applies.
About the Department The NRES Department offers B.S. degrees in Environmental Earth and Soil Sciences, Environmental Management and Protection, and Forestry and Natural Resources, and an M.S. in Environmental Science and Management. The programs enroll ~750 undergraduates and 30 graduates, supported by ~20 tenure-track faculty. Resources include campus field stations, multiple ranches, and Swanton Pacific Ranch (3,000 acres) in Santa Cruz County. The department supports interdisciplinary collaboration across campus, including participation in Cal Poly’s Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) fire institute and the Center for Organic Production and Research.
