Overview The Mechanical Engineering Department at San José State University is seeking an assistant professor (tenure track) beginning in July 2026. The candidate will actively collaborate with the SJSU Wildfire Interdisciplinary Research Center (WIRC) to seek funding and conduct research related to wildfire science and management. The center focuses on developing strategies, technologies, and science-based policies to manage wildfires and understand their impacts on people and resources.

Specific research areas include, but are not limited to: numerical modeling/CFD reactive flow; wildfire dynamics; wildland-urban interface fire spread; AI/ML for predictive/modeling/risk management; and combustion dynamics of wildland and urban fuels.

Key Qualifications

Required:

PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a relevant field by the time of appointment.

Ability to teach and develop courses in the thermo-fluids area for Mechanical Engineering students at undergraduate and graduate levels.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a socially and economically diverse student population, gained through cross-cultural study, training, teaching, or related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Strong publication track record.

Experience or interest in teaching and pedagogical methods.

Experience or exposure to the funding acquisition process.

Interest in establishing industrial partnerships in the Silicon Valley area.

Project supervision experience with undergraduate or master’s students.

Interdisciplinary project experience in a collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

Teach graduate and undergraduate courses in mechanical engineering and related areas aligned with professional interests. Prepare classes, assess learning outcomes, and implement pedagogical improvements.

Conduct and publish research, seek external funding, and supervise student research.

Collaborate with SJSU Wildfire Interdisciplinary Research Center to seek funding and conduct wildfire-related research and management.

Participate in shared governance and service on department, college, and university committees.

Manage classes within the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS).

Demonstrate awareness of and experience with a diverse student population through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies, and advisement.
