Overview

The Director of Quality and Safety reports to the Brown University Health Vice President of Quality & Safety. Under general supervision and within Brown University Health established policies and procedures, this role develops, directs, coordinates, and evaluates comprehensive care transformation activities leading to core measure performance, physician peer review and professional practice evaluation processes, and addressing patient safety events with corrective actions to enhance the culture of safety. The director has administrative oversight for developing and implementing the hospital’s quality, patient safety, patient experience, and performance improvement programs. The Director leads hospital and Brown University Health leadership in building educational and improvement initiatives using best practices and rapid-cycle improvement techniques, monitors performance metrics, supports patient safety, compliance and accreditation efforts, and fosters customer service and patient experience initiatives. The Director will oversee the RIH Patient & Guest Services office and align core quality functions with BUHCS strategy for quality and operational excellence, supporting the hospital's quality committee structure. Provides strategic leadership for the development, implementation, and evaluation of quality metrics for RIH and related processes to achieve optimal outcomes and compliance with evidence-based care, identifying areas for improvement as needed. Responsibilities

The director leads a highly skilled team of quality and patient experience specialists focused on meeting customer needs and exceeding expectations. Oversees and reviews selected quality issues and guides staff to lead investigations of critical events; facilitates root cause analysis and FMEA projects and develops corrective action plans; provides feedback to staff and leadership. Supports development of reports for regulatory and accrediting agencies (e.g., Department of Health, Joint Commission). Interfaces with Care Transformation, Quality and Safety and other Brown University Health quality initiatives and committees; directs optimal use of resources to meet goals; establishes departmental priorities aligned with organizational priorities and strategies. Oversees improvement efforts for quality and service issues, providing feedback and reports to staff and leadership. Supports reporting to regulatory and accrediting bodies and coordinates with Brown University Health Care Transformation, Quality and Safety as needed. Provides oversight for document peer review activity and facilitates Medical Staff and system departmental performance improvement activities. Serves as a liaison to Brown University Health Medical staff departments for coordination of quality improvement actions involving patient care and physician processes; promotes communication of performance improvement information among Brown University Health and the Medical Staff. Leads site and system-wide improvement teams; manages clinical and patient safety data needs and directs implementation of improvement strategies. Monitors performance metrics for diagnostic populations and communicates results to internal and external stakeholders; aims for improved performance in core measures and related metrics. Collaborates with hospital leaders to develop, measure, analyze, and implement process improvements; identifies data-driven solutions for improvement. Supports a culture of employee engagement to improve patient outcomes and delivers customer service training for onboarding and ongoing initiatives. Establishes a robust patient experience program incorporating best-practice models; focuses on patient-centric solutions for diverse patient populations across Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital. Plans information dissemination for hospital-wide and system-wide improvement efforts; directs flow of relevant information to appropriate leaders and committees. Facilitates resolution of family/visitor issues and serves as an expert resource on patient relationship development. Coordinates quality improvement actions with Brown University Health system departments and Medical Staff; promotes meaningful communication of performance improvement information. Coaches staff leading teams to improve performance; coordinates and supports implementation of improvement tactics aligned with organizational priorities; presents and educates staff on tactics and execution; monitors and integrates best practices. Models and promotes Brown University Health’s CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect, Excellence) and adheres to the Corporate Compliance Program and Code of Conduct; supports Quality Priorities service and treatment settings. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications

Education

A bachelor’s degree in nursing or a healthcare-related discipline is required. Master’s degree in a related healthcare field is required. Six Sigma Black Belt certification or equivalent experience leading performance improvement projects is preferred. CPHQ, CPPS, or other quality certifications are preferred. Experience

Minimum of five (5) years of related experience in quality measurement and reporting systems, oversight of physician peer review programs, and process evaluation and improvement. Extensive knowledge of performance improvement systems and methods; effective project management skills; experience with EHR applications and modules, Microsoft Office, databases, and outcomes management; proficiency with Windows-based PC environments and statistical software. Strong facilitation, collaboration, and leadership of project teams; solid written/verbal communication, critical thinking, and analytical skills. Supervision
