Microbiology Lab Operations Director, Technical - East Region
— Quest Diagnostics The Microbiology Technical Director serves as a technical resource to physicians, clients, and internal personnel. The Technical Director will oversee quality, instrumentation, and automation in the laboratories. They are responsible for the validity, accuracy, and analyses of all tests performed within the Laboratory and provide guidance to personnel on laboratory audits. The Technical Director will partner closely with the Medical Director and Laboratory Director to provide sound technical, medical and operational direction to the Business Unit. Responsibilities
Direct, plan, and manage the scientific/medical quality of the technical department. Support network laboratories by undertaking reagent and instrument evaluations. Assist in performing experimental testing procedures; suggest changes in methods to increase validity and accuracy. Determine and develop departmental standards for all test procedures; prescribe appropriate test methods and ensure adherence to quality control programs. Develop and maintain contacts with educational institutions, professional organizations, government agencies, etc., to stay current on clinical test procedures. Ensure proficiency testing is conducted timely, reviewed, and corrective actions approved when results are unsatisfactory. Implement and apply best QA practices in laboratories; communicate quality matters related to test results and interpretation. Assist with policies on quality and accuracy of reporting; maintain communications intra- and inter-departmentally. Ensure compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal licensing regulations. Assist with R&D of new assays, troubleshooting, and improvements of current assays. Participate in formulation and coordination of sales and marketing objectives; liaise with clients and support sales/marketing with technical materials and client lectures. Engage in continuous improvement using Lean Management Systems. Qualifications
10+ years of work experience, including postdoctoral fellowship. 2 years of relevant post-doctoral fellowship with certification opportunity from the American Society of Microbiology in Public Health and Clinical Microbiology. Solid experience in an independent clinical and/or hospital lab environment. Doctoral degree (e.g., Ph.D., Sc.D.) in a relevant biological, chemical, or science major; MD is a plus. Expertise in Microbiology areas: Bacteriology, Mycobacteriology, Mycology, Virology, Infectious Disease Molecular Biology, Immunology and Serology. Working knowledge of Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, or Toxicology preferred. Knowledge of Blood Bank and/or Histology/Pathology a plus. Understanding of business operations, costs, and efficiencies; strong statistics skills. Strategic understanding of staffing needs; knowledge of federal, state, CAP & CLIA regulations. NYS Certificate of Qualifications (CQ) or ability to obtain within 6 months of joining. Competencies
