Senior Engineering Manager, Pixel, Applied AI/ML at Google. Lead a specialized team of AI/ML experts to interface foundational models with the Pixel software ecosystem and power intelligent, real-world experiences for millions of Pixel users. Responsibilities

Oversee systems designs within the scope of the broader area, and review product or system development code to solve ambiguous problems. Review code developed by other engineers and provide feedback to ensure best practices (e.g., style guidelines, checking code in, accuracy, testability, and efficiency). Develop and execute the Pixel-wide strategy for selecting, fine-tuning, and deploying foundational models to achieve specific product goals. Establish the framework for deciding when to use base models versus when to invest in fine-tuning, creating a clear cost-benefit analysis for the organization. Lead the team in direct, fine-tuning of large-scale models, utilizing the latest techniques to optimize them for Pixel-specific use cases. Minimum qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience. 8 years of experience with software development. 7 years of experience leading technical project strategy, ML design, and optimizing industry-scale ML infrastructure (e.g., model deployment, model evaluation, data processing, debugging, fine tuning). 5 years of experience in a technical leadership role; overseeing projects, with 5 years of experience in a people management, supervision/team leadership role. 5 years of experience with GenAI techniques (e.g., LLMs, Multi-Modal, Large Vision Models) or GenAI-related concepts (e.g., language modeling, computer vision). Preferred qualifications

Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, specializing in Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, or Natural Language Processing. Experience with fine-tuning, evaluating, and deploying large language models (LLMs) or other large-scale generative models. Familiarity with on-device ML challenges, including model quantization, performance optimization, and memory management. Understanding of modern ML model evaluation techniques, including benchmarks, metrics, and evaluation methodologies. Ability to define and execute a multi-year technical strategy for an ML-focused team aligned with product and business goals. About the Job

The team shapes the future of Pixel devices and services through advanced designs, techniques, products, and experiences in consumer electronics, combining Google’s AI, software, and hardware to build global smartphones and transformative experiences for users. As an Engineering Manager for Applied AI, you will lead a specialized AI/ML team at the core of Pixel’s AI strategy, acting as the bridge between Google’s foundational models and the Pixel software ecosystem. You will fine-tune and evaluate models to power intelligent, real-world experiences for millions of Pixel users and provide foundational AI capabilities for your teams to innovate. Like Google’s ambitions, the work extends across information retrieval, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking, security, data compression, user interface design, and more. You will guide the way as a manager, enabling engineers to optimize both their work and the products they build. With technical and leadership expertise, you will manage engineers across multiple teams and locations, a large product budget, and oversee deployment of large-scale projects across multiple sites internationally. Compensation

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $248,000–$349,000 plus bonus, equity, and benefits. Salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location.
