Homeward Pet, located in Woodinville, Washington, is one of the leading nonprofit, no-kill animal shelters in the state. Our mission is to give homeless animals a second chance through our rescue, shelter, and adoption programs. Annually, we find new homes for over 1800 cats and dogs. We are dedicated to providing excellent care to our animals and great service to our community, relying entirely on donor support to provide food, shelter, vet care, and more. Role Description The Behavior Program Manager is primarily responsible for the behavioral care of our dogs and cats from their arrival at the shelter through their adoption and transition into a new home. This includes behavior evaluations, creating and implementing behavior plans, training staff and volunteers, maintaining written records, and collecting program data. The Behavior Program Manager also plays a critical role in supporting all shelter programs, providing behavioral support to ensure success for our animals, staff, and volunteers, as well as supporting our community programs and pet retention efforts.
Duties & Responsibilities
Conducts behavior assessments and behavior evaluations for the animals in shelter and in foster.
Develops and implements individualized training and care plans for animals.
Maintains thorough records of behavioral evaluations, training plans, and progress for each animal, and provides written summary reports to staff.
Partners with the Intake and Pet Resources Senior Manager in managing our population in regard to behavior cases, approving the intake of animals with potential behavior concerns.
Supports the Director of Programs and other members of the programs management team in ensuring animals are moving safely through the shelter system towards adoption.
Identifies animals that will need additional training post-adoption and creates specialized contracts, waivers, and behavior plans for adopters.
Assists adoption staff with difficult introductions, counseling sessions, and gives behavior or animal care advice when appropriate.
Supports and executes continuing training and education for staff and volunteers in animal handling and animal behavior.
Acts as staff liaison for Dog and Cat Behavior Teams, ensuring volunteers feel supported and have the skills and continuing education to complete their tasks successfully.
Supports the Foster Coordinator by advising which animals may need a foster break, creating plans to safely send animals to foster, and providing behavior support directly to fosters.
Supports the adoption team to address post-adoption concerns regarding behavior as needed.
Maintains accurate data records for the Behavior Program, sending monthly reports to the Director of Programs.
Maintains community facing programs, including providing free behavior consultations to the public by phone or email.
Provides direct care to shelter animals, including feeding, medicating, walking, socialization, and monitoring for behavioral or medical changes or challenges.
Represents HPAC at events or other public-facing functions, often as a subject matter expert in animal behavior.
Participates in continuing education opportunities and stays up to date on the latest research in animal behavior and animal care best practices.
Performs other related duties as requested.
Qualifications
A minimum of two years of experience assessing and training animals in animal shelters, veterinary hospitals, or related field, with a focus on behavior modification and stress management.
Prior supervisory skills, including the ability to work with and motivate a team of staff and volunteers, strongly preferred.
Strong customer service experience and skills are required, including confidence working with individuals in person, over email, and on the phone.
Must be self-sufficient and able to perform with minimal supervision.
Demonstrated knowledge of safe animal handling; experience with and commitment to the use of positive reinforcement and science-based training methods.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and animal shelter databases preferred, experience with Shelterluv and Volgistics is a plus.
Ability to display a positive attitude, show concern for people, animals, and our community.
Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals, including staff, volunteers, and the public.
Strong organizational skills, good attention to detail, and excellent oral and written communication skills, including confidence in public speaking.
Must be willing and able to have difficult conversations with staff, volunteers, donors, shelter partners, and other stakeholders regarding sensitive subjects such as quality of life and euthanasia decisions with respect, empathy, and knowledge.
Licenses/Certifications Required
Certification in animal behavior (CDBC, CSB-D, CBCC-KA, KPA, CTC or similar)
Fear Free Professional Certification and/or completion of Fear Free Sheltering modules strongly preferred
Valid Washington State driver’s license with no record of major or repeated traffic offenses
Requirements
Must be able to stand for long periods of time, bend at the waist, and get down to the floor and back up to a standing position
Must be able to handle dogs up to 200 pounds on and off leash
Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
Must be willing to safely drive long distances in all weather conditions
