St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center has been dedicated to helping animals in need and serving communities across New Jersey for over 80 years. Position Summary Manage workflow and provide daily supervision to the medical team, participate in medical care, and partner with the Shelter Veterinarian. Ensure the operational flow of the day, assign and track tasks, and respond to requests from other departments. Under the guidance of the Shelter Veterinarian and the Director of Animal Care, establish medical standard operating procedures (SOPs) and ensure adherence. Lead, guide, and support all medical staff and maintain a positive work environment.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership : Ensure the smooth operation of the Medical Department and set high standards for teamwork; supervise the Medical Team (Clinic Supervisor, Veterinary Clinic Scheduler, Medical Technicians, Medical Assistants); participate in full shelter rounds or designate a staff member to attend.
Collaborate with the Animal Care Manager to maintain a high standard of animal care and welfare in accordance with NJAC 823a.
Serve as the point of contact for other departments to uphold responsibilities; delegate daily tasks and ensure completion; promote integrity, fairness, and open-minded leadership.
Oversee hiring, training, growth, supervision, and performance evaluation of the Medical Team; conduct regular medical staff meetings; coordinate in-house training, workshops, and deployments with the Director of Animal Care.
Resolve staff conflicts and maintain a healthy, safe, and positive work environment for employees and volunteers; respond to staff and public requests as appropriate; act as the manager on duty when needed.
Medical Duties : Oversee and participate in euthanasia with the support of the Shelter Veterinarian and Director of Animal Care; oversee maintenance and repair of medical equipment; ensure compliant, Fear Free/humane medical handling practices; establish SOPs for all medical care aspects; oversee daily medical rounds; ensure accurate and timely medical records; coordinate with outside vets as needed; rotate on-call medical emergency duties.
Regulatory Compliance : Maintain drug logs and medical records; prepare and submit quarterly DEA reporting with possible assistance from the Medical Team; ensure compliance with regulatory laws (e.g., medical waste, 823a) and interact professionally with the NJ Department of Health as required.
General : Monitor Medical Department budget with the Director of Animal Care; oversee medical bills approval; manage inventory; collaborate with Animal Care, Customer Care, Foster, WayStation, and Community Programs; be knowledgeable of St. Hubert’s policies; troubleshoot with staff/clients when leadership is unavailable; provide excellent customer service; work with volunteers, fosters, and partners; represent St. Hubert’s professionally; perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications and Requirements
Knowledge of and ability to lead veterinary medical and surgical procedures; understanding of shelter medicine and protocol variations between public shelters and shelters.
Ability to teach and train assistants and technicians; ensure safety and compliance.
Demonstrated ability to lead, manage, and motivate a team; identify and develop skills in others.
Ability to work independently and in a team; manage multiple projects with shifting priorities and deadlines; detail-oriented and adaptable.
Collaborative approach to work; ability to gather information from colleagues; strategic and creative problem-solving skills.
Excellent interpersonal and customer-service skills; professional communication with diverse stakeholders.
Proficiency with computer technology, including Microsoft Office, internet use, and database management software.
Passion for St. Hubert’s mission and for caring for all animals; ability to manage emotional aspects of shelter work professionally.
Motivated and creative with experience in connecting with clients; advanced familiarity with dog and cat breeds, animal descriptions, animal control, wildlife, TNR, and low-cost spay/neuter.
Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment Ability to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted (and heavier with assistance); comfortable working with cats, dogs, small animals, reptiles, fish, and wildlife; ability to perform strenuous physical activity daily (lifting, carrying, reaching, stooping, standing, squatting, bending); ability to work holidays, weekends, nights, and inclement weather as needed; exposure to typical shelter conditions including animals, noises, odors, and varying temperatures.
Education and Experience
Minimum three years of progressively responsible experience as a veterinary technician with emphasis on surgical prep and assistance, including managing staff.
Animal shelter experience is preferred.
Certified Veterinary Technician preferred.
Certified Euthanasia Technician preferred.
Fear Free certification preferred.
