Position Summary
The Tax Manager will be responsible for managing all federal, state, and local tax filings, including the preparation and review of Form 990s and related disclosures. This role will also provide technical guidance on tax-exempt status, UBIT, grants, and compliance with IRS and state regulations. The ideal candidate combines deep nonprofit tax expertise with strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively across departments.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee and manage all aspects of the organization’s tax compliance, including Form 990, 990-T, and state filings.
Ensure adherence to IRS regulations governing tax-exempt organizations.
Research and advise on tax implications of grants, sponsorships, and partnerships.
Review and monitor unrelated business income (UBIT) and ensure proper reporting.
Coordinate with external auditors and tax advisors to support annual filings and audits.
Maintain and improve internal processes for compliance tracking and documentation.
Provide guidance to leadership and program teams on tax-related issues and reporting requirements.
Monitor legislative and regulatory changes affecting nonprofit tax compliance and advise management accordingly.
Assist with special projects, including entity structuring, policy development, and international tax considerations (if applicable).
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or MST preferred.
6–10 years of progressive tax experience, with significant experience in the nonprofit sector.
In-depth knowledge of IRS regulations, UBIT, and Form 990 reporting.
Experience with complex, multi-entity nonprofit structures a plus.
Strong analytical, research, and technical writing skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; able to work effectively with both finance and program leadership.
Proficiency with tax preparation and accounting systems (e.g., CCH, ProSystem fx, or similar).
