Assistant Dean of Communications & Marketing

at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS). This senior leadership role is responsible for creating, implementing, and assessing comprehensive external and internal communications and marketing strategies to advance the school’s mission. The Assistant Dean will enhance the school’s visibility and reputation by communicating achievements, sharing the contributions of faculty, students, staff, alumni, institutes, and centers; highlighting the academic rigor and policy relevance of programs; and showcasing co-curricular opportunities at SAIS locations in Washington, DC; Bologna, Italy; and Nanjing, China. The role oversees the school’s communications and marketing teams, ensuring the quality and integrity of the SAIS brand across all media channels. The Assistant Dean of Communications and Marketing will partner with the Dean, SAIS leadership, faculty, and senior university leaders to develop and implement forward-thinking communications strategies that establish SAIS as a global leader in foreign affairs research, teaching, and learning. The candidate will be a strategic thinker with a deep understanding of academic and foreign affairs communications, with experience navigating fast-paced media environments. They will understand SAIS’ external constituencies—press, public officials and policymakers, and influential voices in international affairs—and tailor content to engage each group. They will lead multifaceted communications efforts, manage multidisciplinary teams, and drive initiatives in brand awareness, enrollment and recruiting marketing, and influencer and stakeholder engagement campaigns. Specific Duties & Responsibilities Strategic Planning and Leadership Develop and oversee the department’s mission and goals aligned with the school’s strategic plan and core values. Collaborate with the Dean, leadership team, and university leadership to craft an overall strategic communications and marketing plan that leverages SAIS’s global presence and advances strategic priorities. Establish clear objectives for the program. Develop and track metrics to monitor progress, measure digital and media success, benchmark against peers, and report impact to leadership. Provide strategic and tactical guidance to anticipate challenges and protect and enhance the school’s reputation. Build the communications and marketing infrastructure to support future growth, including asset development for visuals and websites. Liaise with Johns Hopkins University’s communications and marketing offices to identify collaboration opportunities. External Communications and Media Relations Lead media engagement and digital communications to promote SAIS and its faculty, centers, and programs across channels to reach target audiences. Drive a proactive media relations strategy to elevate SAIS leaders and faculty as thought-leaders on key issues. Develop and deploy an owned-media strategy leveraging social media, websites, video, podcasts, live events, and other channels. Oversee crisis communication with preparedness and effective response strategies for internal and external audiences. Serve as a spokesperson as needed and prepare faculty and experts for media appearances. Internal Communications Develop and execute internal communication plans to engage faculty, staff, and students, ensuring consistent messaging and alignment with strategic goals. Partner with leadership to refine internal messaging and anticipate needs. Marketing and Branding Lead marketing of the school’s academic programs, scholarships, events, and activities; hire and manage external agencies as needed. Develop campaigns to enhance awareness and reputation among prospective students, faculty, staff, and the policy community. Oversee the school’s brand and visual identity, coordinating with University Communications and adhering to brand guidelines. Plan brand audits and website updates engaging the SAIS community. Monitor trends in higher education and international relations to support strategy and decision-making. Team Management Lead, coach, develop, and supervise the team; manage the communications budget and allocate resources for impact. Hire and manage outside contractors or vendors as needed; implement strategies for continuous improvement and adoption of new communication technologies. Collaboration and Partnerships Serve as liaison to university communications offices, Johns Hopkins Medicine, government organizations, and other universities’ policy schools to identify collaboration opportunities. Represent the school in university committees and professional events to foster partnerships and enhance reputation. Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Experience engaging national and international media, public officials, policy influencers, and diplomatic communities with audience-specific strategies and measurable results. Exemplary interpersonal skills and the ability to build trusted relationships with senior stakeholders. Superior writing and editing skills. Ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously and deliver results under pressure. Strong understanding of current debates in foreign affairs and implications for higher education. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree. At least 10 years of managerial-level experience leading full-service strategic communications and marketing programs. Equivalency options per the JHU formula may substitute for some educational or experience requirements. Preferred Qualifications Experience developing comprehensive strategic communications programs interfacing with international and foreign affairs media. Ability to collaborate with diverse teams and influence across multiple departments. Ability to advise senior leaders and leverage a robust journalist and media network to enhance visibility. Experience leading multidisciplinary teams in fast-paced environments; budget management and vendor oversight. Experience in academic or government settings; advanced degree in a relevant field. Employee group: Full Time Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm FLSA Status: Exempt Location: Hybrid: On-site 3-4 days a week Department name: 10000893-Marketing & Communications Personnel area: SAIS This salary range does not include all components of the SAIS compensation program. This position may be eligible for a discretionary retention and performance bonus, based on individual performance and the SAIS performance during the applicable fiscal year, as determined by SAIS leadership.
