Wellstar Health System – Medical Technologist (Med Tech II) overview

Night shift position performing clinical laboratory testing under supervision in General Laboratory, Blood Bank, or Microbiology as assigned. Maintains equipment and records, conducts quality assurance activities, and may supervise and teach within the laboratory setting. Serves as a Generalist in all areas or as a Key Operator / Subject Matter Expert in the assigned area. Maintains accuracy and quality in patient testing, proficiency, and competency. Applies clinical knowledge to analyze, interpret, and report laboratory data. Maintains up-to-date training, education, and adherence to policies and procedures. Demonstrates effective communication and hand-off to team members.

Core responsibilities and essential functions

Performs responsibilities of a Medical Technologist across General Laboratory, Blood Bank, or Microbiology.

Performs routine testing in hematology, urinalysis, coagulation, chemistry, blood bank, and microbiology as requested.

Performs lab quality control, safety logs, workload tracking, and related documentation; supports shift hand-off communications.

Acts as a resource to Pathologists; resolves issues, fields calls, checks critical logs, and trains staff in new procedures.

Supervisory duties (in their absence)

Acts as a supervisor resource, resolving issues and providing technical guidance to other technologists.

Trains staff, serves as consultant to other Supervisors, and supports laboratory operations.

Special assigned duties

Maintains instrument maintenance, procedure manuals, reagent logs, QC reports, and inventory (2 weeks worth).

Maintains performance improvement projects, conducts linearity and correlation studies, and evaluates new tests/procedures.

Performs CAP surveys as assigned and maintains CAP and The Joint Commission readiness.

Blood Bank duties (if required)

Participates in regular bench rotation on evenings or nights as needed.

Runs automated blood bank instruments, performs STAT duties, and orders/supplies blood products as needed.

Qualifications Required Minimum Education:

Degree in Medical Technology or related science (HEW exception as applicable).

Required Minimum Licenses/Certifications:

All certifications required upon hire unless otherwise stated. Med Tech ASCP Certification or Med Technologist (AMT) or Med Technologist (AAB).

Additional Licenses/Certifications:

If applicable per role requirements.

Required Minimum Experience:

Experience as a Medical Technologist with 1 year of Blood Bank experience if applicable. Epic and 3M experience.

Required Minimum Skills:

Computer/data entry experience; ability to communicate with healthcare team; ability to use Excel, Word, and possess basic computer operational knowledge.
