The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) is seeking an Electrical & Electronic System Specialist 3 (In-Training) to perform installation, maintenance, and repair of WSDOT electrical systems. About the Opportunity The successful candidate will act as a senior-level electrical technician performing installation, maintenance, and repair of WSDOT electrical systems regionwide throughout the South Central Region. These systems include traffic signals, highway lighting, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) equipment, electrical and/or electronic systems associated with moveable bridges, fixed bridges with navigation lights, aviation lights, weather information systems, regional building and facilities, structures, communication systems and associated equipment within WSDOT. Responsibilities Diagnose problems and perform repairs on illuminations systems, traffic signal systems, and ITS equipment. Ensure repairs are compliant with all NEC codes and WSDOT specifications. Assist Electronic/ITS Technicians in their troubleshooting efforts; update and use pertinent sections of appropriate contract plan sheets. Schedule and perform preventative maintenance on Traffic Signals, Illumination Systems, and various ITS equipment. Use a metal detector and locator, refer to contract plans, and perform utility locates contact contracts, identify assets using paint, update prints, and manage notifications. Conduct daily and weekly truck inspections. Attend monthly safety meetings and safety classes as required. Troubleshoot systems and equipment for Facilities and TEF. Qualifications Advanced Electrical and Electronic Diagnostic Skills: Senior-level experience in diagnosing and repairing electrical and electronic systems, including traffic signal systems, highway and illumination systems, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). License: Possession of a valid Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) without airbrake restriction or ability to obtain within six (6) months from date of hire. Current Washington State EL-01 General Journeyman Electrical License. Preventative Maintenance and System Upkeep: Proficient in scheduling and performing preventive and routine maintenance on electrical and ITS assets. Technical Collaboration & Mentorship: Ability to assist and support Electronic/ITS Technicians in troubleshooting and repair tasks; capable of leading or training less experienced staff in safe and effective electrical system operations. Construction and System Enhancement Experience: Lead and perform electrical construction and system remodels, including utility locating, plan interpretation, permitting, and compliance with inspection requirements. Leadership and Teamwork: Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and develop lower-level staff by providing clear guidance, constructive feedback, and foster a collaborative team environment. What to Expect Work is performed primarily outdoors on system voltages up to 480VAC; requires working at elevated heights above 60 feet over land or water, as well as traversing rough and steep terrain.
