Overview Uncommon English as a New Language Specialists are passionate advocates for their students, managing both teaching English Language Learners and supporting General Education colleagues. They provide crucial academic interventions to students developing their English language skills and believe they are capable of high academic achievement.
Responsibilities
Instruction
Review intake assessments to ensure students receive educational services and instructional methods they need, aligned with English proficiency.
Provide small group instruction to entering and emerging English Language Learners.
Serve as push-in support for English Language Learners across grade and content areas.
Partner with general education teachers and advocate for classroom accommodations to support student growth.
Work with families in all grades to address questions regarding student progress and accommodations.
Use standards-based assessment data to refine and differentiate curriculum and instruction.
English as a New Language Specific Responsibilities
Collaborate with general education teachers, school leaders, and families to analyze and respond to trends in student work samples and assessments to ensure language development and access to curriculum.
Gather academic growth data and write goals to support progress toward English proficiency.
Teach small groups of newcomers across grade levels, push into the general education setting across content areas and grade levels, differentiate instruction, and create modified materials for English Language Learners.
School Culture
Build positive relationships with students to ensure they feel seen, loved, and heard.
Partner with families to ensure resources are available to support learning needs.
Engage in practice-based professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions.
Participate in weekly, school-wide meetings to cultivate community, model core values, and encourage student achievement.
Collaborate with grade level teams to develop academic goals and practices for instructional strategies.
Deliver school-wide professional development to support teachers in developing differentiated plans.
Qualifications
Demonstrated commitment to supporting students’ social-emotional and academic development
Enthusiasm for collaborating with internal and external partners in the best interest of students
Self-directed learner who solicits and implements feedback to improve outcomes
Required Experience:
Interest in impacting K-12 students in urban schools and communities (1-2 years preferred)
Academic expertise in English as a New Language Instruction, the Humanities, Social Sciences, STEM, or related fields
Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) certification is required
Compensation and Benefits Compensation for this role is between $72,000 to $115,000. Starting pay is determined using factors including relevant full-time teaching experience, education certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools. Candidates without full-time teaching experience will likely have a starting salary of $72,000.
