Position Title: Assistant/Associate Professor or Assistant/Associate Professor of Practice of Opera Theater

Position Description: The School of Music at Texas State University seeks an engaging, creative, collaborative, and dedicated teacher/director to serve as a tenure-line Assistant/Associate Professor of Opera Theater or non-tenure-line Assistant/Associate Professor of Practice of Opera Theater. The selected candidate will also serve as Director of Opera Theater. Duties begin August 2026.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
Direct TXST Opera Theater and produce a minimum of one staged production each semester.
Teach courses on opera production, opera workshop, and opera theater, and other courses according to the candidate’s qualifications and needs of the School of Music.
Maintain a record of scholarly/creative activity and make substantive professional contributions to the field of opera.
Participate in faculty meetings, committees, and service activities.
Other duties assigned by the Director of the School of Music.
Required Qualifications Assistant Professor:
Doctorate in opera directing or related field (must be completed by August 16, 2026), or equivalent professional experience.
Evidence of excellence in teaching opera at the professional or collegiate level.
A record of achievement in opera direction and demonstrated potential for further professional growth.
Potential for success in student recruitment.
Experience working with individuals from varied backgrounds.
Associate Professor:
In addition to required qualifications for the Assistant Professor rank:
Minimum six years of full-time university teaching.
A record of teaching, scholarly/creative activities, and service commensurate with promotion to Associate Professor at Texas State University
A sustained record of achievement in scholarly/creative activity resulting in national recognition and stature.
Demonstrated success in student recruitment.
To be eligible for hire at the Associate Professor rank, candidate must meet the requirements for that rank as established by the School of Music.
Assistant Professor of Practice:
Master’s degree in opera directing or related field (must be completed by August 16, 2026) or equivalent professional experience.
Demonstrated excellence in teaching opera at the professional or collegiate level.
A record of achievement in opera direction and demonstrated potential for further professional growth.
Potential for success in student recruitment.
Experience working with individuals from varied backgrounds.
Associate Professor of Practice:
In addition to required qualifications for the Assistant Professor of Practice rank:
Minimum six years of full-time university teaching experience.
A record of teaching, scholarly/creative activities, and service commensurate with promotion to Associate Professor of Practice at Texas State University.
