Assistant Professor - Department of Philosophy FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT ABOUT THE COLLEGE John Jay College of Criminal Justice is a senior college of the City University of New York (CUNY) and an internationally recognized leader in educating for justice. Led by President Karol V. The Department of Philosophy invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor to start in August 2026. Area of specialization: open with a preference for expertise in philosophy of technology and AI ethics. Area of competence: open. The hiring committee is especially interested in applicants who contribute to the college’s diversity mission through leadership, community service, research, and/or lived experiences. The successful candidate will teach, conduct research, and provide guidance in their area(s) of expertise. They will also share responsibility for committee and department assignments including administrative, supervisory, and other functions. Candidates are expected to develop and maintain an active research and publication agenda and to demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to teaching. The successful candidate must be eager and qualified to work with a diverse student body. John Jay’s diverse philosophy department in Manhattan offers a BA in philosophy. The department also participates in multidisciplinary majors, including a BA in Humanities and Justice. Department faculty regularly teach in the Honors College, and several are appointed as doctoral faculty at the CUNY Graduate Center. Qualifications
PhD in Philosophy required for appointment to the title of Assistant Professor. Degree must be completed by August 1, 2026. We seek teachers and researchers committed to public higher education. Scholarly promise and demonstrated ability to teach undergraduates are required, as well as willingness to collaborate with other departments and possibly teach in interdisciplinary programs and/or engage in team-teaching. Preferred Qualifications : the successful candidate will have research expertise in philosophy of technology and AI ethics. Compensation
$57,252 - $109,025. Salary commensurate with education and credentials.
