Position: 25-26 - East - Assistant Director of High School Athletics - 1.0 FTE (40 hpw)
Base pay range: $63,689.60/yr - $78,998.40/yr
Location: East High, Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD)
Employment Type: Exempt
Summary: MMSD is seeking highly motivated and energetic applicants for the 2025-2026 school year. Applicants should have a good attitude, willingness to learn, and passion for impactful work and learning.
Responsibilities
Supervisory Responsibilities: hire and evaluate coaches and volunteers, recruit and train event staff, manage athletic program oversight and compliance with WIAA regulations, track attendance and grades, maintain athlete records and finances, update handbooks and equipment inventory, liaison with school-based clubs and MSCR clubs, coordinate summer WIAA contact and training opportunities.
Event & Facility Management: create and manage facility availability, secure permits, coordinate practice schedules, assist in planning and executing athletic events, manage facilities and non-district site contracts, conduct inventory and purchasing of equipment.
Communication & Personnel Support: update website and social media, notify stakeholders, communicate with coaches/athletes/parents/staff, recruit and train event staff, coordinate awards ceremonies, follow up on hiring of coaches and game workers.
Financial & Operational Support: process purchase orders, track orders, and manage payment of game workers after events.
Other Duties: work with the Athletic Director on facility improvements, personnel management, budget oversight, conference scheduling; attend district/school functions; complete required training; build relationships with business partners.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Proven experience in athletic administration or a related field.
Strong knowledge of WIAA rules and regulations.
Excellent organizational and time-management skills; ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.
Proficiency with relevant software (e.g., Google Suite, Infinite Campus, rSchool, Arbiter, GoFan).
Ability to plan, execute, and oversee athletic events and facility usage; create systems for facility and schedule management.
Problem-solving, decision-making under pressure, and accurate records management for reporting and compliance.
Commitment to anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in athletic administration, sports management, education, or commensurate experience.
Two or more years of experience in education-based athletics.
License Requirements
Registered Athletic Administrator (RAA) Certification or ability to obtain within 6 months.
Willingness to obtain Certified Athletic Administrator (CAA) certification within three years of employment.
Physical Requirements Ability to lift up to 25 pounds occasionally; may involve walking, sitting, stooping or reaching. Manual dexterity for office tasks. May require being stationary for extended periods. Ability to work in indoor/outdoor environments, including inclement weather and spaces without air conditioning.
Working Conditions
Travel to different locations within the district and to off-site meetings.
Evenings, nights, and some weekends required.
Remote/work-from-home flexibility may be discussed in the interview process depending on position and unit needs.
School-based positions are in-person unless directed otherwise by the building principal.
