The Assistant Dean of Academic Excellence promotes the academic excellence of American University Washington College of Law students, from matriculation through graduation. The Assistant Dean formalizes the law school’s efforts to date and leads a centralized initiative to optimize students’ academic achievements. The Assistant Dean analyzes student success in the law school curriculum and on the bar examination and recommends and works with the Committee on Academic Excellence to implement and supervise supplemental academic training where necessary. The Assistant Dean also advises students on academic excellence in law school and provides strategic planning assistance to improve academic outcomes for all students. The Assistant Dean collaborates with the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Registrar to analyze and, where appropriate, enhance the experience of first-year JD students. The Assistant Dean acts as a liaison between students, faculty, and staff for academic and first-year experience issues. This position reports to the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Registrar and works closely with the WCL Dean, the Faculty Chair of the Committee on Academic Excellence, and faculty, students, and staff throughout the law school community. Essential Functions
Develop an overarching strategy to help students improve their academic skills and achieve academic excellence in law school and on the bar exam, including providing the Committee on Academic Excellence with information and advice on best practices for bar exam preparation; collecting and analyzing data to understand opportunities to enhance students’ experiences; and launching events, programs, and coursework to provide a comprehensive academic experience for WCL students. Understand the first-year experience of JD students at WCL, and provide vision, strategic direction, and accountability for enhancing services that support academic transition and satisfaction. Provide individual and group counseling to students about academic progress, readiness for the bar exam, and choice of bar exam; offer programming and guidance on the administrative aspects of the bar admission process, including timetables and submission requirements. Establish policies and procedures for WCL’s academic excellence efforts and the first-year experience, coordinating between offices. Collaborate with offices across the law school to assess the student experience (e.g., Office of Academic Affairs, Registrar, Student Affairs, Legal Rhetoric Program, Financial Aid, Finance & Administration, Pence Library) and with faculty and staff to launch reforms. Cultivate and supervise Office of Academic Excellence staff, including hiring, onboarding, training, coaching, feedback, and performance evaluation; identify opportunities for staff professional development. Create and maintain a dedicated section of the law school’s website focusing on all aspects of academic excellence, including bar exam preparation. Additional duties may be assigned as necessary. Juris Doctor or equivalent 8 - 10 years of relevant experience Minimum of six years of legal experience Experience in academic skills at a law school or similar academic setting, or in professional bar review services Excellent writing, analytical, and organizational skills Ability to analyze complex situations and implement appropriate actions Experience in teaching, advising, and mentoring students Highest ethical and professional standards with sound judgment Strong administrative and multitasking abilities Positive attitude and enterprising approach Ability to work both independently and in a team Preferred Education And Experience
Juris Doctor 10+ years of relevant experience Travel Required
Travel to national or regional conferences or meetings as appropriate Work Authorization/Security Clearance
