Be a part of a team dedicated to improving language access

Department Description UW Medical Center Montlake’s Interpreter Services Department provides interpreter services to patients who have limited English skills, enabling the patient(s) to access medical care.

Primary Job Responsibilities

Provide interpretation for target language

Provide sight translation in the presence of provider and/or other medical staff

Provide accurate rendition of a written text in one language to an oral message in another language

Provide spoken language interpretation, in person, by telephone or video to transmit information accurately and encourage direct communication between patient and provider or staff

Manage complexity of cross-cultural encounter

Utilize/integrate ethical practice to guide behavior in all interpretation

Provide expert written translation in target language including the initial translation and delivering secondary reviews, editing, and formatting

Orient and train medical center staff on key topics in language access

Consult with provider prior to encounter

Assess patients’ interpretation needs

Explain and clarify cultural behaviors

Requirements High school graduation or equivalent AND three years interpretation and translation experience in a clinic or hospital setting

AND medical interpreter certification or qualification either from Washington State Department of Social and Health Services, the National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters, or the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters.

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.
