Multiple shifts available The Department of Conservation and Recreation – State House Security Program is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment throughout the Massachusetts State House by providing, through a variety of means, public safety, emergency response, security, protection of the Commonwealth’s resources, and enhancement of the visitor experience. Rangers assigned to the State House provide an active and visible uniformed presence that ensures public safety, discourages criminal activity, addresses improper use, and protects the State House’s cultural resources. Public safety and cultural resource protection are maintained by screening visitors for prohibited articles and by offering visitor services and informal interpretation of the building’s cultural history. Responsibilities

Access Control: Inspects and verifies employee identifications entering the Massachusetts State House Access Control: Performs security screening of visitors and items entering the Massachusetts State House in a manner consistent with policy and procedure Access Control: Operates security screening technology such as portable and fixed magnetometers, x-ray machines, and other technologies as assigned Access Control: Monitors and operates facility systems including remote door access controls, duress alarm systems, elevators, and fire alarm panels Access Control: Operates intrusion alarm system and CCTV cameras for unusual and/or suspicious activity Safety/Security: Attends roll calls daily, taking notes as required Safety/Security: May attend trainings or department meetings outside of normal scheduled shifts Safety/Security: Conducts patrols of the Massachusetts State House or staffs fixed security posts to protect the State House and ensure visitor safety Safety/Security: Provides a public presence and acts as a deterrent to criminal activity and/or rule violations Safety/Security: Conducts crowd control in areas with large groups, in alignment with training, policy, and procedure Safety/Security: May place barriers, fencing, ropes, signs, etc. to maintain public order Safety/Security: Controls vehicular and pedestrian traffic when necessary to promote public safety Safety/Security: Assists fellow rangers and the public as needed Safety/Security: Detects and responds to suspicious/unusual activity and reports to the supervisor and law enforcement Safety/Security: Responds to emergencies and provides aid as directed Safety/Security: Reports incidents, accidents, and emergencies to the shift supervisor Safety/Security: Coordinates with law enforcement and other first responders to prevent theft or damage and to respond to or expel disorderly persons Enforcement

Enforces State House building rules as determined by the Joint Committee on Rules and the Bureau of the State House Issues non-criminal parking citations on roads contiguous with the State House within DCR’s jurisdiction Customer service: Interacts with the public, gives directions, and responds to inquiries; provides clear direction and information to visitors and employees Performs other related duties as required Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications:

Applicants should have at least two years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in the public safety, emergency management, security, public administration, or law enforcement field(s) Minimum Entrance Requirements:

Applicants must have at least two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time experience in park or resource management, environmental education, water resources or water supply management, or natural/cultural history interpretation, or any equivalent combination of the required experience and substitutions listed below. Substitutions:

Associate's degree or higher with a major in park or recreation management, natural resource management, water resources management, environmental education, or park interpretation may be substituted for the required experience. Education toward such a degree will be prorated. Special Requirements:

1) Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts motor vehicle operator's license. 2) Possession of a current and valid CPR certificate from Red Cross or the American Heart Association. 3) Possession of a current and valid standard first aid and personal safety certificate and first responder certificate issued by the Red Cross.
