The DCR is steward to one of the largest and most diverse state parks systems in the nation which includes more than 450,000 acres of parks, forests, water supply protection lands, beaches, lakes, ponds, playgrounds, swimming pools, skating rinks, trails, golf courses and parkways. The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks applicants for a Ranger I, State House, 24 Beacon Street, Boston. The State House Security Program is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment throughout the Massachusetts State House by providing public safety, emergency response, security, protection of the Commonwealth’s resources, and enhancement of the visitor experience. Rangers assigned to the State House provide a visible uniformed presence that ensures public safety, discourages criminal activity, addresses improper use, and protects the State House’s cultural resources. Public safety and cultural resource protection are initially maintained by screening visitors for prohibited articles and by providing information and informal interpretation about the building’s cultural history. The below list describes the general nature of the work and is not exhaustive. Supervisors may assign or reassign duties at any time for any reason. Responsibilities
Access Control: Inspects and verifies employee identifications entering the Massachusetts State House; performs security screening of visitors and items; operates security screening technology; monitors and operates facility systems (remote door access controls, duress alarms, elevators, fire alarm panels); operates intrusion alarm system and CCTV cameras. Safety/Security: Attends roll calls daily; may attend trainings or department meetings outside normal shifts; conducts patrols or staffs fixed posts; provides a public presence and deterrence; conducts crowd control; places barriers as needed; controls vehicular and pedestrian traffic; assists fellow rangers and the public; detects and reports suspicious activity; responds to emergencies; reports incidents to supervisors and State House Ranger Control; coordinates with law enforcement and first responders. Enforcement: Enforces State House building rules and issues non-criminal parking citations on roads within DCR’s jurisdiction. Customer Service: Treats all persons with dignity and respect; interacts with the public, gives directions, responds to inquiries; provides clear information to visitors and employees; performs related duties as required. Qualifications & Requirements
Preferred Qualifications:
Applicants should have at least two years of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in the public safety, emergency management, security, public administration, or law enforcement field(s). First consideration:
will be given to applicants who apply within the first 14 days. Minimum Entrance Requirements:
Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time experience in park or resource management, environmental education, water resources or water supply management, or natural/cultural history interpretation, or (B) an equivalent combination of required experience and substitutions. Substitutions:
I. An Associate’s degree or higher with a major in park or recreation management, natural resource management, water resources management, environmental education, or park interpretation may be substituted for the required experience. Education towards such a degree will be prorated accordingly. Special Requirements:
1) Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts motor vehicle operator’s license. 2) Possession of a current and valid CPR certificate from the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. 3) Possession of a current and valid standard first aid and personal safety certificate and first responder certificate issued by the American Red Cross.
