Overview

Open Rank Senior (Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor) Invasive Species Economist – 9-month (academic year) research and teaching position. The academic home may be in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics (CALS) or the Department of Economics (COS) at Virginia Tech. The position focuses on applied economics with an emphasis on invasive and other harmful species that threaten ecosystems, markets, and economic outcomes. The successful candidate will contribute to a campus-wide invasive species cluster hire and may be involved in funding summer activities through external grants, teaching, or other mechanisms. Occasional travel to conferences and meetings is expected. The successful candidate will be a core member of Virginia Tech’s Invasive Species Collaborative and participate in team science within a Destination Area that fosters transdisciplinary research to address invasive and harmful species. The position includes opportunities to contribute to the development of a center of excellence focusing on invasive species science, technology, management, outreach, and policy. Responsibilities

Conduct theoretical, analytical, and quantitative research in applied economics addressing invasive and other harmful species. Engage in teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level. Collaborate within a transdisciplinary team and with the Invasive Species Collaborative and related faculty across Virginia Tech. Develop and secure external funding for research, including summer activities as applicable. Contribute to the development and activities of a center of excellence focusing on invasive species science, technology, management, outreach, and policy. Travel to conferences and meetings as needed. Required Qualifications

PhD in economics, applied economics, or a related field combining computational/quantitative modeling and economic theory and/or applications by the start date. At least one full year of work experience as a Post-doctoral researcher, Assistant Professor, or equivalent. Preferred Qualifications

Research experience involving invasive/harmful species. Experience with team science collaborations and working in transdisciplinary teams. Proficiency with tools and methods applicable to the economic study of invasive species, including: modeling and analyzing dynamic processes over time and space theory and methods of market-based or non-market economic valuation computational/analytical methods for large, complex, unstructured data evolutionary game theory, SIR modeling, social contagions, synthetic populations Established record of peer-reviewed publications Participation in grant-funded research Evidence of teaching effectiveness at undergraduate and/or graduate level Appointment and Salary

Appointment Type: Regular Hours per week: 40; M-F 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Salary: Commensurate with experience Senior management: Agriculture & Life Sciences Additional Information
