Overview
Tax Auditor III Assistant Fraud Investigator — State of Delaware. The incumbent will detect and prevent the fraudulent payment of unclaimed property claims, investigate thefts, and pursue prosecution of theft. Investigative steps may include verification of identity documentation, financial documents, tax returns, court orders, wills, mergers, bills of sale, corporate organizational documents, and any other evidence to corroborate ownership of unclaimed property. The position may periodically assist in training and guidance for claim examiners and frontline staff to support awareness of identifying potential fraud during day-to-day review of claims.
Responsibilities
Audit tax filings, financial records, and supporting documentation to determine tax liability and ensure accurate tax collection in compliance with laws, rules, and regulations.
Research tax records and conduct interviews, including field investigations, to obtain and clarify information.
Identify errors, issues, and non-compliance; make recommendations for corrective action based on audit findings (refunds, penalties, late payments).
Provide technical guidance to ensure state tax laws are applied uniformly, deter tax evasion, promote voluntary compliance, and educate taxpayers.
Explain audit findings (assessments, delinquencies, penalties, interest) and work with taxpayers and representatives to bring accounts into compliance.
Complete continuing education to stay current on auditing standards, methods, techniques, and best practices.
Use automated information systems and software to research, review, analyze, document, and report on financial information.
Prepare and submit audit summaries and reports documenting findings and supporting facts; recommend agency action.
Participate in meetings, conference calls, or on-site visits.
Deliver excellent customer service to internal and external customers and the public in person, electronically, or by written communication.
Communicate effectively with people across cultures and diverse backgrounds.
May prepare legal documents to enter judgment against delinquent taxpayers and obtain court authority to garnish wages and arrange payment plans.
Qualifications
Two years’ experience in tax auditing to ensure compliance with tax laws and regulations.
One year of experience in analyzing tax discrepancies or related problems, developing alternatives, and advising on solutions.
Two years’ experience in preparing audit summaries and reports documenting findings, supporting facts, and recommendations.
Two years' experience in providing excellent customer service on tax matters, including gathering information, providing guidance, responding to inquiries, and resolving complaints.
Preferred Applicants who do not possess the preferred qualification will still be eligible to compete if job requirements are met.
