NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene The Office of Surveillance, Informatics, and Evaluation conducts surveillance of suspected and confirmed cases of TB; maintains the TB registry and case management system (Maven) of all TB cases, contacts to TB cases, persons suspected of having TB and children under 5 with latent TB infection (LTBI); partners with programs across the agency in cutting-edge public health informatics projects; and conducts data analysis and research to describe the epidemiology of TB in NYC to inform TB prevention and control policy. The office also coordinates interjurisdictional transfers of TB patients to ensure continuity of TB evaluation, treatment, and care.

We are seeking a candidate to join our office as the Team Lead for Surveillance. This person, with guidance and oversight of the Office Director, will oversee a staff of approximately 6 staff. This person will supervise all surveillance activities, that include but are not limited to monitoring and triaging incoming reports, following up with providers to ensure timely and correct reporting, and surveillance data QA and management within Maven. This individual will ensure that all persons with confirmed or suspected TB are reported and assigned for case management, as appropriate. The Team Lead will also supervise activities related to laboratory coordination, to ensure all necessary specimens are processed and reported in a timely fashion, and interjurisdictional coordination, to ensure that all patients entering and leaving NYC are triaged and referred as needed.

Duties Will Include But Not Be Limited To

Independently conduct research analyses on surveillance and laboratory data for publication and dissemination to internal and external audiences Participate in research activities with external collaborators in the area of molecular and conventional laboratory surveillance, methods and results Oversee and supervise the review and management of incoming TB reports submitted by NYC providers electronically or by fax for accuracy and completeness; ensure that follow-up with providers is conducted as necessary Ensure that healthcare providers and infection control staff are educated on TB reporting guidelines and procedures Supervise data entry and updates into the bureau's electronic surveillance and case management system (Maven) and ensuring appropriate assignment of TB cases and suspects Collaborate with other units/offices in the bureau Conduct analysis and review of surveillance data to improve and ensure data quality Oversee the processing of hospital discharge requests of infectious TB patients Manage lab coordination and ensure that specimens are being routed as appropriate, results are received timely, and data is QA'd and cleaned as needed

- Oversee interstate coordination and ensure that all relevant jurisdictions are notified, and all necessary information is received for incoming and outgoing patients by the receiving jurisdiction; -

Help to ensure that all appropriate steps for connecting patients to care in the new jurisdiction occur Manage the handling and triaging of calls coming from the TB Hotline and ensuring prompt and appropriate response

Preferred Skills

Proficiency with a statistical programming language such as SAS, R, Python, and SQL Ability to thrive both within a team environment and independently Proficiency with MS Office Strong analytical and organizational skills Must be able to multitask Excellent oral, written, and presentation skills Supervisory experience

CITY RESEARCH SCIENTIST - 21744

Minimum Qualifications

For Assignment Level I (only physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health) A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.

To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have:

A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in "2" above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in "1" and "2" above.

Residency Requirement

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment.
