Crisis Line Counselor-Remote (for Texas residents only)
The Harris Center for Mental Health and IDD is seeking a Crisis Line Counselor to join our team. This role provides remote crisis intervention for individuals in Texas, including The Harris Center Crisis Line’s function as the regional hub for the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Overview The Harris Center Crisis Line provides 24/7/365 crisis intervention for people experiencing a mental health or intellectual/developmental disability crisis. Counselors deliver immediate intervention and de-escalation, collaborate with callers to create coping and safety strategies, and connect to appropriate levels of care when necessary. The service also serves as the Crisis Line for several Local Mental Health Authorities in Texas and the regional hub for the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Responsibilities
Be ready and available to take calls during an assigned shift.
Build connection, rapport, and demonstrate empathy with callers.
Use active listening skills and the crisis intervention model.
Accurately and thoroughly assess calls using the Crisis Line Comprehensive Framework tool.
Collaborate with the caller to explore options and brainstorm solutions.
Provide thorough and appropriate use of resources and referrals based on call type and framework.
Handle calls and follow-up calls throughout the shift.
Document thoroughly during and briefly after calls.
Make timely referrals as needed.
Contribute to suicide care and prevention by applying trauma-informed practices rooted in safety, trust, choice, collaboration, and empowerment.
Education
Bachelor’s degree
Experience
Customer service experience, preferably phone-related.
Be able to attend and successfully complete 200+ hours of training, covering telephonic customer service, crisis intervention theory, listening skills, call management, mental health and IDD issues, suicide and homicide risk assessments, Harris Center services, community resources, and partnerships.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Typing at a minimum of 40 wpm.
Ability to navigate several computer systems simultaneously.
Remote Qualifications
Must have reliable, high-speed internet that can be connected via ethernet cable.
Must have a private, quiet space that recreates an office environment free from distractions and household members.
Cannot provide family or childcare during work hours.
