Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) seeks an experienced technical leader to drive software development efforts over the coming decades. The Level 5 position is the most senior technical role in this job family. It is organizationally located within the Aircraft Carrier Reactor and Propulsion Plant Planning Yards, and will also be an Associate Technical Fellow with dotted-line reporting to the NNS Central Engineering Office. This role supports software development projects spanning all Naval Nuclear Propulsion Plant (NNPP) platforms. Duties Will Include
Providing subject matter expertise to cross-functional teams within NNS developing and testing software and their associated requirements Coordinating with cross-functional teams across NNS, Electric Boat (EB), Bechtel Plant Machinery Inc (BPMI), Naval Nuclear Laboratories (NNL), and the Navy to ensure NNPP Software Enterprise executes its strategic objectives Driving excellence, efficiency, and continuous improvement to these teams Working on unusually complex technical problems and delivering innovative solutions Serving as the organization’s spokesperson on software development projects and advising management and customers on advanced technical topics Using proactive foresight to identify risks and opportunities and advising stakeholders on appropriate actions Occasionally developing and presenting reports to broad audiences that are logical, self-explanatory, and accurate Providing oversight, guidance, and training to NNS staff to develop technical and organizational competencies Advising management on industry trends and emerging technologies impacting cost, schedule, quality, and efficiency Collaborating with project management to implement best practices for software development (Agile, DevOps, Waterfall, etc.) Ideal Candidate and Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have professional experience or knowledge of: Designing, developing, qualifying, testing, and/or operating Naval Nuclear Propulsion Plants Developing, testing, and verifying software and requirements for Generic Instrumentation and Control (I&C) systems and components Performing Software Qualification by Criticality Level (SQCL) evaluations Cybersecurity and Control System Security (CSS) requirements The Generic Hardware Building Block (HWBB) Catalog Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) practices The Ideal Candidate Will Have These Characteristics Able to work under consultative direction towards predetermined long-range goals with minimal direction Natural catalyst for a positive, purpose-driven culture; strong interpersonal skills and leadership by example Ability to navigate and lead through change to meet evolving business needs Data-driven decision-making balancing technical requirements, business objectives, and team capabilities Must Have Bachelor’s Degree with 14 years of relevant exempt experience; Master’s Degree with 12 years; Ph.D. with 9 years.
