Scouting America is seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Senior Editor to join our team, reporting to the Supervisor of Editorial Operations. This role is responsible for assigning, developing, writing, and editing content for publications, products, and other media. The Senior Editor also plays a key role in product and publication planning, ensuring that all materials reflect brand standards and effectively communicate our mission.
In addition, the Senior Editor partners with illustrators, designers, and printers—guiding selection, managing costs, and approving final work to deliver high-quality products that inspire and inform our audiences. Responsibilities
Develops, writes, edits, and updates an inventory of publications and products, including digital and print articles, blog posts, and guides, reflecting subjects of interest to Scouting America readers. Proposes strong supplemental ideas to enhance publications. Edits all content and ensures their on-time delivery. Suggests graphic treatment for publications in conjunction with the photo and design departments. Develops new writers. Performs other job-related duties as assigned. Knowledge of:
Writing and editing principles, grammar, and style guides; Scouting America mission, values, and target audience; current trends and best practices in content creation and publishing; digital production and multimedia editing. Skill in:
Writing, editing, and proofreading; interpersonal communication; project management and organization; time management and meeting deadlines; research and fact-checking; using editing software like Adobe Creative Suite. Ability to:
Develop and manage relationships with volunteer and contract writers and other creators; think creatively and develop engaging content; provide constructive feedback and mentorship; manage budgets and negotiate with vendors; using technology and digital tools relevant to the role. Qualifications
Minimum of ten (10) years of experience as an editor, preferably in a publication or content development role. Must pass a criminal history background check. Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above-specified education and experience requirements.
