Overview
The Verona Police and Fire Commission is accepting applications to fill a Police Lieutenant vacancy created by retirement. This is a promotional process open to both internal and external candidates. General Management
Plan, direct, control and evaluate the work of subordinate personnel. Supervise duty rosters and related leaves in the absence of a supervisor. Maintain efficiency and discipline within the department. Direct day-to-day activities of personnel and assign cases, monitor workloads, and set departmental priorities. Evaluate and approve incident reports and ensure timely disposition. Maintain confidential administrative files on personnel. Regularly confer with the Chief of Police on department functions. Prepare and submit required monthly reports. Conduct staff meetings to share information on crime analysis, intelligence, and investigative strategy. Evaluate and address departmental problems and manage department and community training and certifications as a trainer. Prepare portions of the department’s annual budget within the assigned component. Represent the department at meetings and public appearances as required. Review evaluations of subordinates and supervise personnel under direct command. Assume the duties and responsibilities of the Chief of Police when appropriate and provide general supervision over departmental operations. Conduct interviews to evaluate qualifications of candidates for employment or promotion and recommend personnel action. Develop and manage policy and ensure enforcement of policies, procedures, directives, rules and orders as set forth by the Chief of Police.
Major Incidents and Investigative Functions
Respond to major crime scenes to coordinate activity. Allocate departmental resources and arrange mutual aid as necessary. Develop, approve, and organize investigative reports. Provide information to the news media as required and brief the Chief of Police and others as needed. Review and approve reports; assign reports for further investigation. Supervise special programs and monitor investigations. Provide supervision over drug enforcement and serve as lead agent for the Suburban Drug Unit of Dane County.
Specialized Functions
Maintain regular communication with the Chief regarding daily activity. Stay familiar with area crime trends and data analysis. Participate in command and staff meetings; evaluate personnel; supervise training. Ensure enforcement of policies and directives. Perform other special assignments as designated by the Chief of Police. Inspect equipment and department property for readiness. Supervise collection, analysis and dissemination of intelligence and crime analysis information. Maintain working relationships with counterparts in other jurisdictions. Develop and maintain Court Services interactions with City Attorney, District Attorney, and court systems. Develop, implement, and coordinate Youth Services programs and liaison with youth and social services providers. Develop, implement, and coordinate the police/school liaison program. Manage records management systems, IT-related tasks, and social media platforms. Engage in emergency preparedness and management development and exercises. Prepare, apply for, and manage grants, budgets, and property/equipment acquisitions.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
This job requires considerable knowledge of municipal police administration, policies, training, supervision, and applicable laws, ordinances, and codes. It also requires strong skills in police management, leadership, planning, organizing, supervising, evaluating subordinates, and clear communication both orally and in writing. Ability to establish working relationships with public officials, department members, and the public is essential. Acceptable Experience and Qualifications
Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board Law Enforcement Certification. Five years of full-time law enforcement experience, and three years as a first-line supervisor at Verona Police Department or a comparable agency. An Associate Degree (Bachelor’s Preferred), preferably in criminal justice, public administration, or a related field. Actual and demonstrated management and leadership level experience. Demonstrated proficiency in managerial and administrative principles and procedures. Statement of Working Conditions
Governing framework under the City of Verona Administrative and Professional Compensation and Benefit program for supervisory, confidential, managerial, or executive employees pursuant to Wisconsin Statutes 111.70(1)(b) and 111.70(1)(o). Salary
2025 Salary Range:
$96,770.23 – $120,225.44, depending on qualifications. A compensation plan study approved in 2025 will be implemented in 2026. 2026 Salary Range (Advertised):
$98,400 – $132,337, depending on qualifications. Position Accountability
