The Department of Parks and Recreation, Division of Urban Forestry, Horticulture Services Branch, Arboriculture Section, located at 3902 Paki Avenue, is seeking an International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist (or someone who will obtain the credential before completion of probation) to lead multiple arboriculture crews and maintain City trees across the island. The position plans, assigns, schedules, and monitors crews and contractors to ensure high standards of work and service. Work hours are Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Special working conditions apply, including emergency responses in inclement weather and disaster response duties during declared emergencies. This range is provided by City and County of Honolulu. Your actual pay will be based on your skills and experience — talk with your recruiter to learn more. Position Information Lead arboriculture crews to maintain City trees; plan, assign, schedule, and monitor work to meet the City’s high standards. Investigate requests and complaints related to the City’s trees. Prepare annual performance reports and conduct staff investigations for disciplinary actions if necessary. Normal work hours are 6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Responsibilities Supervise a group of employees and coordinate grounds improvement and beautification projects. Plan and oversee propagation and cultivation of plants, shrubs, and trees; care and maintenance of parks, gardens, streets, malls, and other landscaped areas. Prepare reports and develop training programs; manage staff performance and, if needed, conduct investigations. Respond to public, utility, private, and government inquiries related to City trees. Minimum Qualification Requirements At the time of application, you must be a citizen, national, or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment. Education Requirement Equivalent to graduation from a regionally-accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture, horticulture, or a related field. If education is earned outside the United States, a comparable credential must be provided via foreign credential evaluation (FCE). Please attach or mail official transcripts or diploma; unofficial transcripts are not accepted. Work experience may be substituted for a bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis. Substitution does not reduce the two-year experience requirement listed below. Experience Requirement Two (2) years of supervisory experience involving responsibility for a program overseeing propagation and cultivation of plants, shrubs, and trees; or care, maintenance, and beautification of parks, gardens, streets, malls, or other landscaped areas. Demonstrated knowledge in: horticulture and arboriculture propagation and cultivation methods tree trimming/pruning techniques plant, tree, and shrub arrangements pest and disease control budget preparation Must Have The Ability To plan, coordinate, and supervise the work of staff plan and establish grounds improvement projects prepare reports develop and implement training programs deal effectively with subordinates and others License/Certification Requirements Prior to Appointment: Valid Hawaii State driver’s license (Type 3/automobile); Current State DOT medical examination certificate; Hearing Conservation Test. Prior to Completion of Probation: CDL Class A or B; First Aid/CPR/AED; International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist credential.
