Join our team! The Town of Estes Park seeks qualified applicants for the position of Police Commander. Under the direct supervision of the Police Chief, the Police Commander serves as a Watch Commander for the Estes Park Police Department and provides oversight of patrol operations, supervises first-line supervisors and staff on shift, ensures operational effectiveness, and maintains accountability for day-to-day policing services. Acts as the Police Chief’s designee when required. The duties listed are illustrative of the responsibilities of the position and not all encompassing. The Town may change these duties at any time. Responsibilities
Provides overall supervision and direction of patrol operations during assigned shifts. Oversees scheduling and assignment of personnel for routine patrols, special events, and critical incidents. Directly supervises Sergeants and other assigned staff, providing mentoring, coaching, and discipline when appropriate. Implements and enforces department and Town policies, procedures, and directives; ensures compliance with laws, court decisions, and best practices. Assists in selection, recruiting, hiring, onboarding, and promotion of staff. Assists the Police Chief in developing and implementing department goals, policies, and long-term strategies. Ensures that patrol operations align with departmental priorities, community policing principles, and crime prevention strategies. Prepares reports, data analysis, and performance metrics to evaluate shift operations which inform command staff decisions. Coordinates with the other Police Commander to ensure proper coverage for investigations, code enforcement, auxiliary, community service officers, and school resources. Recommends and deploys specialized resources to address crime trends and quality-of-life issues. Monitors officer performance in the field; conducts ride-alongs, evaluations, and inspections to ensure adherence to department standards. Reviews and approves significant reports, arrests, use-of-force incidents, and other major casework during assigned shifts. Provides ongoing feedback and direction to ensure officers meet professional standards of conduct, report writing, and community engagement. Maintains awareness of emerging policing issues, legislative changes, and law enforcement trends; makes recommendations for adaptation. Works collaboratively with schools, businesses, and community groups to address crime prevention and public safety needs. Provides input into budget development, staffing levels, and equipment procurement. Responds to citizen inquiries, complaints, and requests for service; ensures professional resolution of concerns. As appropriate and in coordination with the Police Chief, may conduct preliminary investigations of personnel complaints. Represents the department at town meetings, community forums, and regional task forces when assigned. Responds to and assumes command at major incidents, critical events, natural disasters, and high-risk calls for service until relieved by the Police Chief or other ranking official. Coordinates multi-agency responses during emergencies, ensuring communication, cooperation, and effective use of resources. Serves as acting Police Chief when delegated, exercising full decision-making authority in the Police Chief absence. Performs other related work as required or assigned. Qualifications and Experience
Bachelor\'s Degree or 120 credit hours from an accredited college or university. Eight (8) years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience with five (5) years as a police Sergeant or an equivalent level senior command position. Preferred: Completion of a recognized Command School or Leadership in Police Organizations program such as FBI or Northwestern School of Police Staff and Command; Master’s Degree. Valid Colorado Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record. Out of state candidates must obtain Colorado Driver’s License within six months. State of Colorado Peace Officers Standards Certificate required (POST Certification). Out of state candidates must have provisional POST certification upon hire and must be POST certified within the probationary period. Residency and Remote Work
RESIDENCY REQUIREMENT:
Must establish and maintain residency within 75 minute commute time and 30 mile radius of duty location. Residency requirements must be met within 6 months of hire. Residency within the Park R-3 School District Boundary is preferred. REMOTE WORK ELIGIBLE:

Knowledge of Town policies and procedures; current personnel practices and issues. Demonstrated skills in organizational and personnel management; budget development and management; and effective communication with media and public.
