Overview
Under limited supervision performs security work of routine difficulty in the supervision, care and welfare of inmates detained in the Jail facility; performs related work as assigned. Why join the Detention Team

Maintains the safety and physical security of the Jail facility Responds to and manages emergency or crisis situations, using communication skills to resolve volatile situations Responds to and manages life-threatening, potential life-threatening and hazardous situations Manages housing units of up to 144 occupants Controls, supervises and documents the movement and activities of inmates Conducts inspections, searches (including pat-downs and strip searches) and security checks of inmate housing areas Administers first aid including exposure to blood and bio-hazardous materials Maintains detention records Performs routine receptionist and clerical duties Works with detention statistics and computer data Supervises the activities of visitors, support personnel and program volunteers Conducts inventories of detention supplies and commodities Distributes and collects all incoming and outgoing mail Assists in securing firearms and ammunition in the gun locker Conducts manual and automated criminal history checks Examines and interprets court orders and release documents to determine correct court, housing needs and releases Appears in court and/or hearings as a witness Assists with the jail facility's level of cleanliness per standards Essential functions and physical requirements
Essential functions include driving; standing and walking to work within jail population on different levels; climbing stairs; working with and around other detention staff, administrative staff, inmates and the public; dealing with interruptions; vision, hearing and manual dexterity needed for safety, computers, equipment, inmates, and alarms. Exposure to noise and odors (e.g., pest control, kitchen, cleaning supplies) is expected. Basic qualifications
Must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien. Must be 18 years of age at time of appointment. Must reside within Coconino County upon appointment. Must be a high school graduate or possess a GED. Additional requirements
Must obtain an Arizona driver's license upon appointment and maintain it throughout employment. Must successfully pass a written examination, interview board and physical agility test. Must successfully complete background check, polygraph examination and medical examination prior to employment. Must not have a felony conviction within the last ten years or a dishonorable discharge from the military. Must not have a misdemeanor conviction involving domestic violence within the previous five years. Must not have used dangerous or narcotic drugs in the past five years beyond experimentation. Must successfully complete a minimum of 240 hours of correctional training within twelve months of employment. Working conditions and capabilities
This position is non-exempt from overtime and safety sensitive. Working knowledge includes: report preparation and record keeping; standard housekeeping practices; human behavior and diverse backgrounds; search and restraint procedures; cash handling; security systems and detention facility policies; judicial system; escalation and de-escalation of force. Some knowledge includes: detention facility practices, basic bookkeeping, records maintenance, supervising others, computer use, English grammar, defensive tactics. Ability to analyze situations, maintain housing unit safety for up to 144 occupants, interact impartially with diverse individuals, respond calmly to emergencies, work rotating shifts, and establish effective working relationships.
