NYC Department of Environmental Protection (NYC DEP) The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) provides high-quality drinking water, manages wastewater and storm water, and reduces pollution to protect public health for New Yorkers. DEP is the largest municipal water and wastewater utility in the U.S., with nearly 6,000 employees and a water supply system comprising reservoirs and lakes across a 2,000 square mile watershed. The Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations is hiring energetic individuals to join the Environmental Health and Safety Division. The City Research Scientist assists in developing and maintaining environmental, health, and safety initiatives, ensuring compliance and effective policies at all organizational levels. Key Responsibilities include:

Recognizing hazards and assessing risks to workers and the environment. Performing EHS assessments and inspections at facilities and field sites. Implementing corrective actions for safety and environmental issues. Conducting field work across NYC, engaging with personnel and agencies. Maintaining records and reviewing relevant regulations and policies. Participating in research, policy development, and training programs. Developing and conducting training on EHS regulations. Researching and analyzing EHS programs. Managing systems supporting research and compliance. Handling regulated waste management and environmental incident responses. Preparing and submitting reports. Requirements:

A valid NY State Motor Vehicle Driver License is required and must be maintained. Minimum Qualifications:

For Level I: Master's degree in physical, biological, environmental sciences, or public health from an accredited institution. For Level II and above, candidates need: A doctorate with relevant experience, or A master's with extensive research experience, or Equivalent education and experience, with at least two years of relevant experience. Note: A minimum one-year probationary period applies. Preferred Skills:

OSHA HAZWOPER 40-hour certification. Proficiency in MS Office, especially Excel and Access. Knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DEC, and NYC regulations. Strong communication, organizational, interpersonal, and analytical skills. Additional benefits include eligibility for federal student loan forgiveness programs and NYC residency requirements within 90 days of appointment.
