Overview
The EHS Specialist is responsible for ensuring compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations and promoting a safe and healthy work environment within an organization. They develop, implement, and manage programs and procedures to minimize risks, prevent accidents, and protect the well-being of employees, visitors, and the surrounding environment. The EHS Specialist collaborates with various departments and stakeholders to establish and maintain effective EHS practices throughout the organization.
Essential Functions
Compliance Management:
Stay up-to-date with applicable environmental, health, and safety regulations and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws.
Assist in the development, review, revision, and implementation of EHS policies, procedures, and guidelines to maintain regulatory compliance.
Monitor and evaluate EHS performance metrics to identify areas for improvement and develop action plans to address deficiencies.
Risk Assessment And Risk Mitigation
Identify potential environmental, health, and safety hazards in the workplace through risk assessments and job hazard analyses.
Conduct regular audits and inspections to identify potential hazards, assess risks, and ensure adherence to safety standards.
Collaborate with departments to implement control measures to mitigate or eliminate identified risks.
Assist in the management and implementation of employee safety shoe and prescription safety glass programs. Conduct other administrative tasks as assigned.
Employee Training/Coaching
Develop and deliver EHS training programs to educate employees on safety practices, hazardous materials handling, emergency procedures, and other relevant topics.
Conduct regular safety meetings and toolbox talks to promote awareness and engagement in EHS initiatives.
Provide guidance and support to employees on EHS-related concerns, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and reporting of safety incidents.
Employee Engagement
Develop Safety Committee and lead monthly Safety Committee meetings to review monthly site performance and develop actions to address emerging issues.
Work closely with warehouse employees, drivers, and field installers to understand the job challenges and hazards.
Assist with accident/incident investigations, root cause analysis, and development of corresponding corrective actions.
Create a collaborative relationship with employees and management to gain trust and promote open communication.
Work closely with managers/supervisors to educate and coach front line management on EHS topics and concerns.
Continuous Improvement
Stay informed about industry best practices and emerging trends in EHS management.
Proactively identify opportunities for process improvement and recommend initiatives to enhance workplace safety and environmental sustainability.
Engage with cross-functional teams to promote a culture of safety and sustainability throughout the organization.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health and Safety, or a related field (relevant experience will be considered in lieu of a degree).
Function independently; self-starter
Working knowledge of local, state, and federal EHS regulations.
Experience with Ergonomic Assessments and material handling preferred.
Experience in a warehouse/distribution operation preferred.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively train employees, collaborate with stakeholders, and influence positive change.
Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite required.
Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet deadlines.
Attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy in record-keeping and reporting.
Ability to read, write, and speak English. Bilingual preferred.
Ability to occasionally work varied hours (dayshift, nightshift, weekends).
Physical Requirements
Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb and descend stairs, lift (occasionally) and work in varying environments (office, warehouse, field) required.
Ability to travel, up to 25% of time.
