Christ the King Jesuit College Prep, through the Cristo Rey Network model, provides a college preparatory education to high school students from under resourced communities on Chicago’s West Side. At CTK, we prepare students to achieve their fullest potential through the integration of academics, work experience, extracurricular activities, and service. We are proud that, in the 15 years CTK has been open, 100% of CTK graduates have been accepted to college. Through the Corporate Work Study Program, all CTK students work 5 days per month at a leading Chicago area company. The wages students earn through their jobs fund a substantial portion of the cost of their education, making quality, college prep education possible for students who otherwise would not have access. The resulting work experience, career exploration, mentorship, and networking students gain is invaluable in positioning them to succeed in college and beyond.
Job Summary – Float Van Driver/Chaperone, CWSP
The CWSP Float Van Driver/Chaperone will fill the role of chaperone and van driver interchangeably depending on the needs of the program each day. Depending on the day, the Float Driver/Chaperone will drive CTK students to and from their Corporate Work Study jobs or chaperone a third-party school bus that is driving CTK students to and from work. This is a part-time seasonal position that begins each year in mid to late August and ends each year at the end of May or beginning of June. The position is scheduled Monday – Thursday with two shifts each day. Shift times are approximate, as they may vary based on the number of students present each day and traffic conditions. The first shift is from approximately 7:30am to approximately 10:00am and the second shift is from approximately 2:30pm to approximately 5:30pm. Compensation for the position is $19.25 per hour.
Responsibilities
As a Van Driver
Student Transport: Drive student workers from the school to their job placements in the morning and from their work placements back to the school in the afternoon/evening. Drop students off at the correct location and watch students walk into the building of their assigned work placement. Van/Shuttle Operation
Adhere to all rules of the road and CTK and Pace policies. Adhere to all safety rules and procedures when loading or unloading student workers. Ensure all students are wearing seatbelts at all times the van is in operation. Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure safe operating conditions. Do not drive a van that does not pass your inspection. Maintain sufficient gas level for each route and fill the van/shuttle as needed. Take van/shuttle for cleaning and service as assigned. Student Transport: Serve as the CTK chaperone on a third-party school bus as it transports students from school to work each morning and from work to school each afternoon/evening. Assist the driver in navigating to each drop-off location each morning and to each pick-up location each afternoon. Ensure every student is present and accounted for before the bus leaves CTK each morning, ensure that every student is dropped off at the correct location, ensure every student boards the bus at each stop in the afternoon/evening, and ensure every student is dropped off at CTK at the end of each day. Responsibilities As Both Driver And Chaperone
Student Transport: Utilizing the provided daily route sheet, ensure that all students are on the van/bus and accounted for before the van/bus leaves CTK. Maintain accurate knowledge of assigned routes and stops. Follow the assigned route sheet without variation unless specifically instructed otherwise by supervisor. Utilize GPS to determine the best route between each stop each day. Ensure a welcoming, orderly, appropriate, and professional van environment. Student Safety
Ensure students safely enter and exit the van/bus at their designated stops. Ensure all passengers are safely seated at all times while the van/bus is in motion and that students on vans have seat belts securely fastened. Maintain order on the van/bus, explain safety procedures to passengers as needed, enforce rules of conduct and respond to emergencies, including the safe evacuation of passengers during emergencies. Always be in full charge of the van/bus and address student behavior concerns as they arise. As needed, assist student workers onto and off van/bus. Van/Bus Upkeep
Ensure the van/bus is free of garbage at the end of each route. Bring any student items left on the van/bus to the CWSP office at the end of every route. Reporting
Prepare and submit required reports and daily trip logs. Report all issues of student behavior and policy violations to supervisor. Report any concerns related to the condition of the van/bus to supervisor. Additional Responsibilities
Exercise good judgment in the performance of job responsibilities and work. Engage positively with students while maintaining appropriate boundaries. Communicate effectively with CWSP staff. Comply with rules set in school, federal, state and local policies and regulations. Other duties as assigned by supervisor. Requirements
Possess a high school diploma or the equivalent. Hold and maintain a valid driver’s license with no serious moving violations (must be insurable with a good driving record). Have a minimum of 3 years previous safe driving experience. Have excellent integrity and demonstrate good moral character and initiative. Interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with students and staff. Be reliable and dependable, attending work each day and being on time for each shift. Be sensitive to the ethnic, racial, and religious backgrounds of the student body. Willing to work in a faith-based institution. Ability to perform work while standing, sitting, and/or walking. Ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision, and hearing. Ability to grasp and move items with hands. Ability to bend, squat, climb stairs, and reach. Ability to lift 25lb or more. Please note: The successful candidate is required to pass a background check prior to hire and annually while employed, obtain and maintain Pace driver certification, maintain a driver's record clear of major incidents, and pass annual and random drug (including marijuana) and alcohol screenings.
