Public Safety Officer II - Armed (Full Time, 1st Shift)
Base pay range: $23.65/hr - $35.50/hr
Location: Illinois Masonic Medical Center (IMMC); Chicago's Northside near Wrigleyville
Employment type: Full Time; 1st Shift Hours: 7am-3:30pm
Major Responsibilities
Provides security services with professionalism, fairness, and compassion in challenging circumstances and in accordance with policies, procedures, and training. Present a professional, approachable, and service-oriented appearance and demeanor. Maintain department uniform and equipment in good repair; enforce safety and security rules and regulations.
Perform routine interior and exterior patrols, inspections to identify vulnerabilities and hazards, audits of Interim Life Safety Measures, patient valuables management, contraband searches; provide information, directions, and assistance to patients, visitors, and team members. Manage traffic and monitor conduct of visitors; confront unauthorized persons for questioning.
Prevent, respond to, and investigate workplace violence. Respond to service calls (combative or threatening patients or visitors, and team member incidents). Serve as a primary resource for de-escalation.
Plan, prevent, practice, and respond to emergencies (lost or abducted infants/children, fire, active threats); respond immediately and intervene physically when needed per training.
Investigate incidents on Advocate Aurora property; complete timely, accurate reports; escalate complaints to the appropriate leader with supporting documentation.
Perform liaison rounding to build partnerships with departments/units; deliver security awareness education to staff.
Liaise with state and local law enforcement and first responder agencies; coordinate and monitor prisoner/guard activities to ensure policy compliance and safety.
Assist as a training resource for the Department; serve as preceptor for probationary officers; manage orientation, onboarding, assessment, and training records; prepare lesson plans and act as field instructor when assigned.
Support departmental administrative duties, including reviewing reports and records for quality and accuracy; inspect uniforms, equipment, and supplies and report findings to leadership.
Maintain current Department training standards in radio communications, verbal de-escalation, CPR, clinical restraints, conducted energy weapon (Taser), and any department-issued equipment per the Annual Training Plan.
License/Registration/Certification Required
Security Officer Healthcare Certification (CHSO) from IA HSS must be obtained within two years of appointment (recertification not required).
Valid driver’s license (state).
Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) Card or Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) license as applicable.
Must meet state licensing requirements and obtain a Firearm Control Card (FCC) for Proprietary Personnel within 90 days of hire.
Certified in Conducted Energy Weapon (Taser) use within 90 days of hire and periodically thereafter.
Education Required
High School Diploma or GED
Experience Required
4 years of experience in a security or public safety role including responses to emergent situations and risk mitigation, or 30 college credits in Criminal Justice/Police Science with 3 years of work experience and 1 year in security/safety.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Required
Illinois armed security requirements: completed 40-hour armed course with semi-automatic pistol endorsement; willingness to carry a department firearm; purchase/maintenance of firearm and level III holster as per policy.
Annual qualification: achieve at least 70% on State of IL Mandatory Active Duty and Retired Officer Handgun Qualification Course (unassisted); probationary officers must qualify within 90 days.
Strong judgment and professional demeanor; ability to de-escalate and handle difficult interactions.
Experience in quick assessment of dangerous situations and appropriate action; strong verbal and written communication; basic computer skills (Word, Excel, web navigation, databases).
Background checks, drug screen, and health/psychiatric screenings as required pre- and post-employment.
Ability to detain non-cooperative individuals when necessary and to restrain as appropriate; effective radio/telephone communication and coordination with team members and patients/visitors.
Physical Requirements And Working Conditions
Must sit, stand, walk, and drive throughout the workday; lift up to 35 lbs; push/pull up to 35 lbs; operate and maintain firearms; 20/20 vision or corrected to 20/20.
Exposure to mechanical, electrical, chemical, explosive, and radiation hazards; required protective clothing as needed.
Frequent exposure to aggressive behavior; ability to handle stress and assist nursing staff with lifting patients.
