Overview
This position is a union role in the Illinois Department of Revenue. Anticipated start date is February 16, 2026. The class title is Revenue Auditor I - 38371, with 2 vacancies in the Sales Tax Technical Support Unit of Audit in Springfield, Illinois. Responsibilities and expectations are described in the sections below. Essential Functions
Under general supervision, conducts specialized technical research of tax accounts for audit to determine whether tax compliance problems exist. Researches complex technical, controversial or highly sensitive cases and/or issues. Independently and/or as a member of a team, conducts field and/or office audits either manually or via personal computer, which often include highly sensitive cases and/or less complex or medium sized Illinois and out-of-state corporations, industries, business organizations, or self-employed taxpayer returns. Analyzes and reviews completed audits involving various taxes administered by IDOR. Receives classroom and on-the-job training involving new or revised statutes, rules and regulations, IDOR policies and procedures and personal computer audit methods and techniques to enhance auditing skills and knowledge. Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above. Minimum Qualifications
Qualification Path A Requires a bachelor's degree. Requires successful completion of fifteen semester hours of progressively coursework in accounting including at minimum: two introductory accounting courses, two intermediate accounting courses, and one course in taxation or audit. Requires successful completion of the Revenue Auditor Trainee program. Qualification Path B Requires a bachelor's or higher degree in Accounting or a Certified Public Accountant certification. Requires successful completion of the Revenue Auditor Trainee program. Conditions of Employment
Requires the ability to successfully complete a tax compliance and fingerprint-based background check. Requires ability to travel in the performance of duties, with overnight stays as appropriate. Requires appropriate, valid driver's license. Requires the ability to use and secure a state issued mobile device, e.g., cellular phone, laptop computer, tablet, etc. This position is considered heavy work as defined by the U.S. Department of Labor (20 CFR 404.1567(d)). Heavy work involves lifting no more than 100 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds. This position has been found to meet the requirements in section 4A-101 of the Illinois Governmental Ethics Act requiring the occupant/employee to file a Statement of Economic Interest. The Illinois Governmental Ethics Act requires certain state officials and employees to file annual Statements of Economic Interest with the Office of the Secretary of State that will be made available for examination and copying by the public. All employees required to file a Statement of Economic Interest are also required to file the Supplemental Statement of Economic Interest with the Executive Ethics Commission.
