Overview San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office is hiring Deputy District Attorneys I/II/III/IV who perform professional legal work involved in criminal prosecution, including investigation, trial preparation, and legal research. Incumbents receive reports from law enforcement or petitioners; evaluate evidence and facts; determine the nature of crimes and authorize issuances of criminal complaints; interview prospective witnesses and develop cases for prosecution; and prepare trial briefs and engage in trial practice.

Initial Appointment Your application will be reviewed for eligibility for all levels within the Deputy District Attorney Series. Job offers for the initial appointment may be made at any level based on qualifications and department needs. Candidates will advance within the series in accordance with criteria in the MOU (see page 57-58 of the downloadable PDF).

Salary and Assignment Notes Salary posted is the range for the I-IV levels. See the job description and salary for each level below.

Incentives VICTORVILLE/JOSHUA TREE ASSIGNMENT INCENTIVE

Candidates assigned to the Victorville or Joshua Tree offices may be eligible to receive an additional incentive of $77 per pay period ($2,002 annually). See the Attorney MOU for details and criteria.

Conditions of Employment Assignment : Assignments may be made to any location in the County, depending on department needs.

Pre-Employment : Candidates must successfully pass an extensive background investigation, which may include a credit check, fingerprint check, and medical exam.

State Bar : Must be an active member in good standing with the State Bar of California at the time of hire and maintained while employed in this classification.

Sponsorship : County is not able to consider candidates who require visa sponsorship at the time of application or in the future.

Qualification Levels Deputy District Attorney I

Must meet one of the following options:

Option 1: Have passed the California Bar Exam and are pending licensure

Option 2: Have taken the California Bar Exam and are awaiting results

Option 3: Active Member of the CA State Bar

Deputy District Attorney II/III/IV

Active membership and in good standing with the State Bar of California.

Must meet one of the following options:

Deputy District Attorney II: One (1) year of criminal trial experience as an attorney or two years of trial experience as an attorney.

Deputy District Attorney III: Two (2) years of criminal trial experience as an attorney or three years of trial experience as an attorney.

Deputy District Attorney IV: Three (3) years of criminal trial prosecution experience as an attorney or four years of trial experience as an attorney.

Selection Process & Application Procedure Applicants who plan to attend the Newport Beach Prosecutorial Job Fair should complete and submit the online employment application and supplemental questionnaire by September 5, 2025. Oral assessments will be conducted on-site during the event for Deputy District Attorney I. On-site interviews may be conducted for Deputies II–IV.
