EH&S at Stanford University seeks an Assistant Biosafety Officer (ABSO), who will support Stanford University's biological safety programs, reporting to the institutional biosafety officer (BSO). This position provides crucial support to the BSO by assisting with personnel and programmatic oversight. The ABSO supervises a team of biosafety specialists who provide protocol review, consultation, and in‑field services to the research community. The role helps design, develop, and manage Biosafety & Biosecurity programs across Stanford's research enterprise, including the School of Medicine, and supports the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC). The ABSO ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and fosters productive relationships with principal investigators involved in research.
In This Role, You Will
Develop, implement, and oversee biosafety programs; interpret policies and procedures as they apply to environmental, health, and safety practices.
Serve as a subject matter expert in one or more EH&S areas; lead technical meetings; represent assigned area in meetings with internal and external customers.
Directly supervise and provide guidance to individual contributors, including contractors and matrixed staff.
Develop training programs and communication strategies around biosafety protocols; create outreach for researchers (students and post‑docs) for rolling implementation.
Ensure programs comply with applicable statutes and regulations and meet environmental, health, and safety requirements.
Investigate and resolve questions or complaints from within the organization, customers, or regulatory agencies.
Ensure environmental health and safety inspections are conducted, corrective actions completed on time, and documentation maintained.
Develop, maintain, audit, and evaluate policies and documentation for regulatory compliance and continuous improvement; may represent the university as a designated safety officer when required.
Additional Responsibilities
Program Oversight and Development: participate in research compliance committees; facilitate risk assessment and registration for rDNA, prion‑like proteins, and biological agent protocols.
Utilize data metrics to recommend improvements; conduct audits and assessments to maintain compliance.
Address issues or complaints from the university community and external / regulatory agencies.
Support compliance programs including bloodborne pathogens, aerosol transmissible diseases, high containment research, facility design and review, and operation of biocontainment facilities.
Build Relationships and Increase Collaboration: supervise Biosafety Office staff; represent the office in engagements; foster collaboration with chairs, faculty, researchers, and staff.
Assist researchers with review of proposed work, containment levels, and hazard assessment strategies; collaborate with stakeholders to engage the university community in biosafety efforts.
Minimum Requirements
Education & Experience: Bachelor's degree in a related science or allied field and five years of related progressively responsible experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Advanced degree and / or certifications may be required for some programs.

Must possess and maintain a valid California non‑commercial Class C Driver's License.
Physical Requirements
Frequent standing, sitting, and computer work; occasional lifting up to 40 pounds; ability to drive day or night.
Working Conditions
Must wear personal protective equipment as required; may be exposed to hazards (e.g., high voltage, radiation, biohazards, chemicals).
