Overview

The Non Profit Experienced Tax Manager is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, and serving as the primary client contact for complex non-profit tax issues. The role requires applying knowledge to understand potential tax disclosures, exemptions and unrelated business income issues, communicating risks, and making top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation and resolution of questions from federal/state agencies. The successful candidate will be a critical member of the regional Nonprofit Tax team and participate in marketing and networking within an area of expertise while maintaining client relationships and acting as the primary contact for complex questions. Job Duties

Tax Compliance:

Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens; ensures self and client service teams comply with Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM). Reviews tax returns and resolves tax issues with the client; involves specialists where appropriate. Plans for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consults with the client and/or partner as appropriate. Reviews ASC 740-10 (Uncertain Tax Positions) workpapers and disclosure for audited financial statements. Plans and reviews the tax process and procedures, including budgeting, staffing, monitoring engagement timelines, timely billing, collection of A/R, managing client relationships/expectations, and providing timely advice to clients.

Research:

Identifies when research is needed; frames issues to be researched; reports analysis concisely; applies Firm standards for preparation of WTA and tax returns; involves firm specialists when appropriate.

Tax Consulting:

Assists with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient methods to maximize client benefits by decreasing current and future taxes; combines tax knowledge with business/industry knowledge to recommend solutions. Develops and implements a work plan for ongoing projects; frames projects for delegation to seniors/associates; serves as a technical resource to peers; manages inquiries from federal/state agencies with minimal assistance.

Strategy Development:

Introduces and develops ideas to improve client position, reduce taxes/expenses, or enhance nonprofit tax benefits; reviews studies of tax implications and offers alternative actions; researches and implements nonprofit tax strategies, including testing new strategies; captures lessons learned to improve processes.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Supervises associates and senior associates, reviews work, trains on tools, acts as a Career Advisor, schedules workload, and provides performance feedback.

Education & Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree required (Accounting/Finance/Economics/Statistics preferred); Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.

Experience:

Six or more years of nonprofit tax experience and/or related public accounting/consulting experience; prior supervisory experience required.

License/Certifications:

CPA, Attorney (admitted in U.S. jurisdiction), or EA or equivalent; other professional certifications applicable to the role preferred.

Software & Tools:

Proficient with Microsoft Office; experience with tax research databases and tax compliance software preferred.

Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Superior verbal and written communication skills; strong analytical, research and decision-making abilities; team leadership and client relationship skills; ability to articulate tax advice in writing and to present issues and resolutions to clients.

Compensation

Individual salaries are determined after considering qualifications, experience, skills, and geography. Minnesota Range: $100,000 - $130,000; Illinois Range: $120,000 - $139,000. About Us
