Overview
Experienced Tax Manager, Non Profit at BDO USA. The role involves advising clients on the tax implications of their objectives, evaluating actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, and serving as the primary client contact for complex non-profit tax issues. You will apply knowledge to issues such as tax disclosures, exemptions, and unrelated business income, communicate potential risks and policy changes, and make top-level decisions regarding filing and resolution of questions from federal/state agencies. You will be a critical member of the regional nonprofit tax team, participate in marketing and networking within your area of expertise, and maintain client relationships as the primary contact for complex questions. Job Responsibilities
Tax Compliance: ensure clients comply with applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens; ensure firm policies and the Tax Quality Manual are followed by self and client service teams Review of tax issues and engagement with clients; involve specialists as appropriate Plan for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues; consult with client or partner as needed Review ASC 740-10 (Uncertain Tax Positions) workpapers and disclosures for audited financial statements Plan and review the tax process, including budgeting, staffing, engagement monitoring, timely billing, accounts receivable collection, and client relationship management Provide timely advice to clients on tax matters Research
Identify when research is needed; frame issues clearly and report analyses Apply firm standards for preparation of WTA and tax returns; involve firm specialists as appropriate Tax Consulting
Develop and implement efficient methods to maximize client benefits and reduce current and future taxes Combine tax knowledge with business/industry understanding to recommend solutions Develop and implement work plans for ongoing projects; delegate effectively to seniors and associates Serve as a technical resource to regional peers Manage inquiries from federal and state agencies with minimal supervision Ensure client service teams comply with firm policies regarding Written Tax Advice (WTA) Strategy Development
Develop new or improved ideas to reduce taxes or expenses and identify nonprofit tax benefits Review studies of tax implications and present alternatives to clients Research and implement nonprofit tax strategies and leverage lessons learned to improve processes Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervise associates and senior associates on projects; review work and provide feedback Train associates and seniors in current software tools Act as a Career Advisor and manage workload of junior staff Education, Experience, and Certifications
Bachelor’s degree required; preferred majors include Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred Six (6) or more years of nonprofit tax experience and/or public accounting or related fields; prior supervisory experience required CPA, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Enrolled Agent (EA) required; other relevant certifications preferred Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with tax research databases and tax compliance software preferred Skills and Abilities
Superior verbal and written communication skills Ability to delegate effectively and manage teams Strong analytical, research, critical thinking, and decision-making skills Ability to work well in a team; capable of developing and maintaining client relationships Executive presence and ability to present issues and resolutions to clients About Us
