$148,636.80/yr Closing Date: November 3, 2025 Are you looking for a rewarding and challenging opportunity to make a difference in the community? The Milwaukee County Office of Corporation Counsel (OCC) acts as general counsel to Milwaukee County and its departments, boards, committees, and elected officials, handling a wide range of civil legal issues that impact the County and the public. The OCC represents the County in litigation and provides advice across practice areas including labor and employment, real estate, contracting, land use, information management, governance, risk management, public records requests and open meetings. The office may also engage in transactions and provide policy-aligned legal analysis. The Milwaukee County Office of Corporation Counsel currently utilizes a hybrid work model with in-person work required at least three days per week and up to two remote days, subject to supervisor approval. This model is subject to change at the discretion of the Corporation Counsel. Responsibilities
Represent the County in litigation before federal and state courts as well as administrative agencies. Practice areas include civil rights, employment, labor, public records, open meetings, appellate practice, and related proceedings; perform legal writing, research, and trial work. Provide written and oral legal advice to elected officials and other county leaders, ensuring advice is thorough, accurate, timely, and practical, and accounts for underlying policy considerations. Interpret federal, state, and local law to support decision making with reliable legal analysis. Represent County departments in transactions including general contracting and procurement, real estate development, bond issuance, landlord-tenant issues, intergovernmental agreements, and memoranda of understanding; assess litigation risk related to transactions. Contribute to internal process and procedure improvements, support the office’s strategic plan, and participate in internal work groups. Represent the office in the community through presentations, panels, and speaking engagements; participate in interdepartmental work groups as required. Assist with onboarding and mentoring of new attorneys; provide back-up coverage for colleagues as needed. Other duties as assigned. Demonstrate dedication and passion for public service. Minimum Requirements
Must be a current resident of the State of Wisconsin. Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school and a member in good standing of the State of Wisconsin Bar Association. Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite including Word and Excel. Preferred Knowledge and/or Experience
Experience in a municipal or government setting and prior experience prosecuting and defending civil litigation and administrative actions. Significant experience and/or strong interest in Labor, Employment, and Transactional Work. Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to build strong working relationships internally and externally; foster cooperation and identify alignments between parties with opposing interests. Demonstrates professionalism, ethics, and strong interpersonal communication skills. Understand the intersection between legal advice and county operating procedures and finances; capability to present complex topics clearly. Effective oral communication before internal and external groups; ability to prepare and present written analyses of complex topics. Ability to make independent legal decisions, conduct legal research, and assess facts and evidence. General knowledge of common computer software; ability to learn new software as necessary.
