Overview

Senior Surgical Technologist - MPO Ambulatory Surgery Center (Bellaire) at Houston Methodist. The Sr Surgical Technologist possesses proficient knowledge and skills to carry out delegated tasks related to safe and efficient operating room support functions and procedures. This role works independently, exercises sound judgment, and reports observations and patient problems to the licensed nurse or surgeon. In addition to performing the duties of a Surgical Technologist, the Sr Surgical Technologist provides mentoring and guidance for other Surgical Technologist positions, trains and orients new staff, and supports related non-nursing functions in line with Houston Methodist values. Responsibilities

Promotes a positive work environment and facilitates open, professional communication to achieve department results. Serves as a role model and educator within the interprofessional team. Teaches critical thinking, provides constructive feedback, and serves as the department preceptor for new surgical technologists. Fosters teamwork by anticipating needs, responding to requests, and supporting improvements in staff engagement. Service Essential Functions

Prepares the operating room, equipment, and supplies for the next patient; anticipates instrumentation and supplies needed for the procedure; maintains surgeon preference cards. Assists with surgical procedures by passing instruments and supplies; performs duties as a surgical technologist across multiple specialties (orthopedics, gynecology, general, ENT, ophthalmology, urology, cardiovascular, spine, neurology, oral/maxillofacial, and minimally invasive). Assists the circulating RN with sponge, instrument, needle, and other surgical counts. Quality/Safety Essential Functions

Maintains sterile technique; prepares sterile dressings and immobilization devices; assists with terminal sterilization and room cleaning after procedures. Supports department safety initiatives, prioritizes multiple tasks with minimal supervision, and participates in debriefing and quality improvement activities. Initiates corrective actions to improve department and hospital quality and safety targets; reports near misses and collaborates with the care team. Finance Essential Functions

Uses surgical supplies efficiently and minimizes waste; contributes to cost containment during cases. Manages time effectively, reduces incidental overtime, and assists teammates during high workload periods. Growth/Innovation Essential Functions

Identifies opportunities for innovation and improvement; may co-chair a unit-based Shared Governance Council. Serves as a departmental resource on committees and participates in one committee or subcommittee to achieve goals. Continually develops knowledge and updates the My Development Plan (MDP). High School diploma or equivalent. Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program or military training equivalency. Work Experience

Two years as a Surgical Technologist. Licenses And Certifications - Required

Health Services/BLS - Basic Life Support (or Instructor) - AHA. Certification as CST (NBSTSA) or TS-C (NCCT) or CSA (NCCSA) or eligible under applicable grandfather clause; 30 CEUs every two years as applicable. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Demonstrates necessary skills and competencies to safely perform the job; participates in ongoing assessments and evaluations. Proficient English communication skills; customer service orientation with positive language use. Medical terminology proficiency; independent judgment in interactions with physicians and care teams. Proficient use of EPIC and other hospital databases; strong instrument and supply knowledge; competency in decontamination and autoclave use. Serves as a clinical resource in at least one surgical specialty service line. Supplemental Requirements

Work Attire: Scrubs; no uniform restrictions noted beyond department norms. On-Call: May be required to be on-call during emergencies.
