Senior Surgical Technologist - Full Time (Days)

This position requires proficient knowledge and skills necessary to carry out delegated tasks associated with the safe and efficient operating room support functions and related procedures. The role works independently, exercises sound judgment, and reports observations and patient problems to the licensed nurse or surgeon. In addition to performing the duties of a Surgical Technologist, the Senior position provides mentoring and guidance for Surgical Technologist positions, training and orienting others. The position is responsible for assigned non-nursing functions and practices relationship-centered care in concert with Houston Methodist values. Other duties include general patient care and department upkeep as delegated by licensed personnel.
Responsibilities
Promotes a positive work environment and supports the interprofessional health care team to achieve optimal department results. Facilitates open, professional communication and role modeling by example.
Teaches others to think critically, provides structured feedback, and serves as the department preceptor for new surgical technologists.
Facilitates teamwork by anticipating needs and responding to requests for assistance. Supports peer-to-peer accountability to improve department engagement and patient satisfaction.
Prepares the operating room, equipment and supplies for the next patient. Maintains and communicates updates for surgeon preference cards. Assists with surgical counts and instrument handling as appropriate.
Assists the circulating RN with sponge, instrument, needle, and other counts. Maintains sterile technique and supports safety initiatives and practice standards.
Participates in debriefing and quality improvement activities to ensure quality patient care and supports corrective actions and improvement efforts.
Essential Functions
Prepares the operating room, equipment and supplies for each procedure; anticipates instrumentation and supplies needed; communicates updates for surgeon preference cards.
Acts as surgical technologist across a variety of procedures (orthopedics, gynecology, general, ENT, ophthalmology, urology, CV, spine, neurology, oral/maxillofacial, minimally invasive).
Assists circulating RN with counts and procedural support.
Quality/Safety Essential Functions
Maintains sterile technique and prepares dressings or immobilization devices as needed. Prepares instruments for terminal sterilization and supports room decontamination as required.
Supports department safety initiatives and standard practices; manages multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
Participates in debriefing and quality improvement to enhance patient care and safety; reports near misses and collaborates with the team.
Finance Essential Functions
Uses surgical supplies efficiently and recommends cost containment where appropriate; minimizes unnecessary openings.
Manages time effectively, prioritizes tasks, and assists teammates as workload requires.
Growth/Innovation Essential Functions
Identifies opportunities for innovation and efficiency; may co-chair a unit-based Shared Governance Council.
Serves as a department resource on committees and pursues opportunities for continual development and learning.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent (GED, etc.).
Successful completion of an accredited Surgical Technology program or military training equivalency.
Work Experience
Two years as a Surgical Technologist.
Licenses and Certifications - Required
Health Services/BLS - Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA).
Certification as CST (NBSTSA), TS-C (NCCT), or CSA (NCCSA), or meet grandfather clause (SB 643) as applicable; 30 CEUs every two years.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Demonstrates competencies to safely perform duties, with competency assessments and evaluations.
Proficient in English (speaking, reading, writing) as it relates to safety and patient care.
Effective communication with patients, families, physicians, and team members; customer service oriented.
Understanding of medical terminology and hospital information systems (e.g., EPIC).
Independent, with sound judgment and the ability to use surgical instruments and supplies appropriately.
Competent in decontamination and autoclave use; serves as a clinical resource in at least one surgical specialty.
Supplemental Requirements
Work Attire: Scrubs; uniform not required; department-specific requirements apply.
On-Call: On-call may be required during emergencies.
Travel: Travel may vary by department; generally minimal within the Houston area.
