Job Summary The Director, Oncology is responsible for the leadership of Radiation Oncology with direct oversight of day-to-day operations, staff supervision, and communication and collaboration with physicians, physicists, nursing staff, front desk staff, and others. Principal responsibilities include management of day-to-day operations, establishing clinical standards of care; personnel management; assisting administration in the preparation of the department budget; serving as a liaison with external vendors; participation in the capital equipment requests process including equipment evaluation; and procurement and evaluation of other equipment and supplies. The Radiation Oncology Director collaborates with physicians and physicists on issues related to patient care and acts as a resource within the institution and the community in the care of cancer patients. The Director is responsible for education, staff development, and quality improvement for the Radiation Therapists.

Essential Functions

Evaluates competence of RTTs on each technology and procedure for which they are assigned to perform.

Determines resources needed for new technologies and procedures.

Establishes training programs for RTTs on new technologies and procedures.

Coordinates and implements work assignments of radiation therapists to ensure proper work coverage and practical experience.

Proactively advises and counsels student therapists and RTTs with issues and concerns.

Serves as a member of management team to identify and solve problems, develop and implement policies and procedures, and address issues facing Radiation Oncology and the institution.

Participates in capital equipment purchases and budget planning.

Establishes and maintains an onboarding program for new hires.

Provides radiation therapy services as an essential member of the treatment team, delivering total quality care to each patient.

Communicates effectively with patients, families, and other Radiation Oncology team members.

Handles stressful situations, makes informed decisions, and provides emotional support to patients and families.

Documents treatment set-ups, doses, and calculations accurately and legibly.

Uses judgment on situations requiring consultation with the radiation oncologist before proceeding with treatment.

Explains procedures to patients and outlines communication during treatment and emergency procedures.

Provides instructional direction to therapists and students on routine and complex localization and treatment procedures.

Fulfills the essential functions of a registered RTT in the clinical setting of Radiation Oncology.

Evaluates and assesses treatment delivery components through QA/QC checks, monitoring readings, detecting equipment malfunctions, and taking appropriate action.

Evaluates patient physiologic and psychological responsiveness daily and provides effective patient education.

Maintains ethics and adherence to professional standards, policies, and procedures regarding treatment delivery and patient care.

Performs other duties as assigned and complies with all policies and standards.

Leadership Responsibilities

Supervision and Staff Management

Provides leadership, mentorship, and professional development opportunities for departmental staff.

Schedules employees to ensure effective use of resources and advises leadership on staffing issues.

Conducts performance evaluations, sets goals, and provides feedback on staff performance and development.

Strategic Planning and Financial Oversight

Collaborates with hospital leadership to set the department’s strategic direction, including budgeting, resource allocation, and long-term planning.

Monitors expenditures to ensure cost-effective delivery of services.

Evaluates and implements new technologies to enhance operational efficiency.

Develops and implements departmental policies, procedures, and protocols to optimize quality and efficiency.

Quality Assurance and Regulatory Compliance

Ensures compliance with relevant regulatory bodies; may oversee accreditation processes as applicable.

Participates in audits, inspections, and accreditation activities.

Follows quality control practices to ensure accuracy, consistency, and safety.

Collaboration and Communication

Works with leadership teams to coordinate and improve service delivery.

Stays up-to-date with industry advancements, new technologies, and regulatory changes.

Staff Responsibilities

May work in a staff role when required; ensures duties and responsibilities are fulfilled while meeting established competencies.

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited Radiation Therapy program required

Master's Degree in an accredited Radiation Therapy Master’s program preferred

5-7 years clinical experience as a Radiation Therapist required

4-6 years supervisory or department director experience in Radiation Therapy preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Proficiency in managing daily operations of a Radiation Oncology department.

Ability to supervise and lead staff effectively.

Strong communication and collaboration skills with medical professionals and staff.

Expertise in establishing clinical standards of care.

Budget preparation and financial management.

Experience liaising with external vendors and managing equipment procurement.

Ability to evaluate and procure capital equipment.

Knowledge of personnel management and development.

Experience in quality improvement initiatives.

Ability to act as a resource for cancer patient care within the institution and community.

Licenses and Certifications

ARRT - American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Registered in Radiation Therapy required

Licensed Radiologic Technologist as required

BCLS - Basic Life Support required
