Overview
The Senior Director of Health Equity serves as a key member responsible for advancing the organization’s mission to eliminate health disparities and promote equitable health outcomes across Buffalo and Western New York. This role provides strategic oversight of a broad portfolio of health and wellness programs including Community Health Promotion and Support (COMHPS), HRSA initiatives, Multi-Service Centers, Preventive and Intensive Programs, Medicaid 1115 Waiver initiatives, the Maternal Mobile Unit, and partnerships such as Catholic Medical Partners.
The Senior Director will lead efforts to integrate social determinants of health into service delivery, strengthen cross-sector partnerships, influence health equity policy, and ensure programs are culturally responsive, evidence-based, and aligned with best practices in public health, healthcare administration, and social work.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Organizational Alignment
Provide vision and leadership for the League’s health equity strategy, ensuring all programs align with organizational goals, community needs, and national best practices.
Lead strategic planning, program development, and evaluation across the health equity portfolio.
Collaborate with the leadership team to embed health equity principles into all Buffalo Urban League initiatives.
Program Oversight & Quality Assurance
Oversee the design, implementation, and evaluation of health and wellness programs to improve outcomes for underserved populations.
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as funding requirements.
Establish performance metrics and outcomes to measure impact and guide continuous improvement.
Community Engagement & Advocacy
Develop and sustain partnerships with hospitals, health systems, public health agencies, community-based organizations, and policymakers.
Advocate for systemic changes that address health inequities and social determinants of health.
Represent the Buffalo Urban League in coalitions, task forces, and at conferences to elevate the organization’s role as a health equity leader.
Integration of Clinical & Social Services
Supervise interdisciplinary teams of community health wellness professionals, social workers, and case managers.
Develop integrated service models that connect individuals and families to comprehensive healthcare, mental health, and social services.
Promote culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and evidence-based approaches to care.
Grants, Compliance & Fiscal Management
Oversee program budgets, ensuring financial sustainability and accountability.
Manage a diverse portfolio of federal, state, and private grants, including compliance, reporting, and renewal.
Collaborate with the grant writing and development teams to secure new funding opportunities.
Staff Leadership & Professional Development
Supervise, mentor, and support program directors, managers, and staff across the health equity portfolio.
Cultivate an inclusive workplace culture of excellence, collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning.
Lead professional development efforts, ensuring staff remain current on public health and social service best practices.
Qualifications Required:
Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master’s degree in Public Health (MPH), Human Services, or a related field.
Demonstrated success in program management, staff leadership, and cross-sector collaboration.
Experience in a nonprofit or community-based organization with a mission-driven focus.
Excellent leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills.
Track record of securing and managing federal/state grants and private foundation funding.
Familiarity with Medicaid, Medicare, and other healthcare funding streams.
