Job Title Bus Monitor (0721)
Reports To Operations Manager

Primary Purpose Ride buses and help driver ensure safe and orderly transportation of students with disabilities
Qualifications
Must be 18 years of age
Ability to move actively through large numbers of people in a limited amount of space
Ability to act responsibly
High School Diploma / GED
Ability to follow verbal instructions and communicate effectively
Ability to complete Monitor Evaluation showing capabilities of fulling job description
Ability to operate safety equipment and adaptive equipment
Ability to work well with children with disabilities
Ability to manage student behavior
Ability to communicate effectively with others
School experience preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties Student Management
Instruct students on safe entering, exiting, and passenger rules and regulations
Supervise students as they board and leave bus and cross street
Take children into building and help them find their way
Learn and adapt to each student's special medical, physical, communicative, and emotional needs
Maintain discipline and use effective behavior management control over groups of students
Report student discipline problems to appropriate administrator and communicate with teachers and parents regarding student's behavior when warranted
Perform emergency evacuation of students on bus when the situation warrants it
Lift and carry students with disabilities on and off the bus according to their individual needs
Routes & Schedules
Become familiar with all routes to and from school campus to be of assistance to driver
Maintain an updated route schedule
Safety
Supervise use of seatbelts, harnesses, or car seats by students
Follow emergency procedures and help driver administer first aid, if necessary
Operate equipment according to established safety procedures
Follow established procedures and techniques to perform job duties, including lifting, assisting students, and other duties as assigned
Other
Become familiar with and follow procedures established by transportation and special education offices
Help driver keep bus clean
Work irregular hours (Split Shift)
Perform other duties as assigned

Working Conditions
Frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures, noise, and vehicle fumes
Work around moving vehicles
Frequently work irregular hours
Occasionally work prolonged hours
Subject to temperature extremes, frequent interruptions, frequent deadlines
Subject to wet/slippery surfaces, enclosed spaces, exposure to fumes, dust, solvents, toxic chemicals/materials
Exposure to noise, rain, snow, sleet, lightning, wind, sun, ice, roof tar, grease, oils, insulation fibers
Tools / Equipment Used
Two-way radio
Global positioning system (GPS)
Wheelchair lift
Safety equipment, including but not limited to flares, reflective signs, fire extinguisher
Posture
Prolonged sitting, frequent standing and twisting, occasional kneeling/squatting, bending, stooping, pushing and pulling
Motion
Moderate walking
Frequent climbing of stairs
Grasping/squeezing, wrist and shoulder flexion/extension, and reaching
Mental Demands
Ability to read and communicate effectively
Ability to maintain emotional control under stress
Ability to understand oral and written instructions
Physical Demands
Frequent reaching overhead and horizontally to reach and place materials/equipment
Frequent bending and stooping
Frequent heavy lifting up to 50 pounds to waist height
Frequent kneeling, crawling under vehicles
Frequent use of powered machinery and tools
Ability to secure wheelchairs as needed

Significant hearing
Clarity of vision at varying distances
Verbal, auditory, and written communication abilities
Peripheral vision, color discrimination, depth perception
