Overview

The Unit Secretary/Monitor Technician performs clerical, clinical, and communication functions on the assigned nursing unit. They provide courteous reception on the nursing unit and arrange and coordinate activities for patient care. Responsibilities

Clerical: Uses computer systems effectively, prints census data, updates census logs, processes admissions/discharges, completes downtime procedures, handles repair requests, maintains outpatient stay logs, manages orders and supplies, stocks printers/fax machines, and keeps work areas clean and organized. Order Transcription: Transcribes all orders accurately and in a timely fashion, prioritizes stat orders, notifies RNs of stat orders, scans orders to pharmacy, orders tests via computer entry, transcribes to Kardex, dates/times completions, flags telephone orders for signatures, notifies appropriate departments of stat orders. Customer Service: Demonstrates courtesy, compassion, kindness, and honesty in person, by phone, and in writing; answers calls promptly; identifies self and unit; routes requests to appropriate personnel. Medical Records Maintenance: Manages patient records to keep charts in optimal condition; assists with chart components; prepares admission charts within 20 minutes of admission; maintains forms, files reports, updates chart dividers, and manages HIM basket retrievals. Teamwork/Collaboration: Follows directions, communicates with management and staff, attends unit secretary meetings or reviews minutes, orients new secretaries, assists physicians and staff with information requests, maintains communication with Charge RN, and stays informed about hospital-wide changes. Monitoring Functions: Monitors and interprets EKG rhythms, observes EEG for seizure activity, notifies RN/Charge Nurse of changes, never leaves the desk unattended during monitoring, tracks equipment, and documents notification times on rhythm strips. Performs other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent Specialized/technical training with successful completion of Medical Terminology exam and basic EKG course Knowledge of medical terminology Excellent communication skills in English (spoken and written) Demonstrated excellent customer service behavior Preferred Qualifications

1 year experience as a Unit Secretary Required Licenses/Certifications

Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) – if no card upon hire, must obtain within 30 days and maintain renewal The hourly rate range for this position is $23.00 - $39.10.
