The Workday Sr. Architect for Finance and Payroll provides thought leadership and subject matter expertise on effective use of process, data and technology, innovative business solutions, and technology industry trends to enable the business strategies of the clients of the University's ERP system. As a member of the Sustainment team, the Sr. Architect partners closely with Finance, Payroll, IT, HR and other key stakeholders to simplify, scale and deliver value from functional process and Workday. Works on process design and flows, improves processes and demonstrates the return on technological capabilities. This role reports to the Sr. Director of Workday Support and Operations. Job Duties/Responsibilities
This position serves as the strategic lead and the primary technical expert directly responsible for optimization and product management for Workday at the university, particularly in the FIN and Payroll modules. Gathers, reviews, analyzes, and evaluates user needs. Provides strategic leadership in planning the system design through desired enhancements and biannual releases. Consults functional areas on business process re-engineering through Workday, data structure redesign and related business rule updates to enable an efficient adoption of best practices Assists with business requirements documents, system configuration documents, and detailed functional specification documents, as needed. Reviews and approves solution designs proposed by analysts as necessary. Configures and tests ERP application break-fixes. Troubleshoots issues and offers solutions Serves as the functional domain expert to simplify, scale and deliver value from the functional processes and Workday, particularly with Payroll, Finance, Grants Accounting, and Budgeting Lead training efforts within Workday, particularly within the FIN and Payroll Modules to business users as a "train-the-trainer" model and end users in formal training settings. Assist IS team in requirements gathering, architecting and configuration, and troubleshooting of integrations related to FIN and Payroll module including Workday punchout catalogs, third party procurement modules(ALMA), NXG, and others as needed Knowledge and experience in configuring and managing Locations and Location hierarchies and their touchpoints between other modules i.e. Work spaces Develops and maintains knowledge base articles involving Workday processes; will assist in crafting SOP documentation involving Workday Evaluation of administrative and business processes, eliciting requirements, partnering with stakeholders and in partnership with subject matter experts in order to optimize operational and financial programs Collaborates with campus partners to identify, recommend and implement system improvements and enhancements, including reporting, dashboards, integrations and configuration changes that will enable the Workday to support strategic and operational priorities Partners closely with the HR, Finance, IT and other key stakeholders to drive requirements gathering, process review, solution design, project management, testing, training and documentation Develops a strong understanding of key operational processes and workflows including the key business drivers behind those processes Provides production support on issues triage, identification and resolution, bulk data uploads (EIBs), maintain security role assignment, and new report requests Evaluates existing technology and new requests against our shared roadmap and makes recommendations about scope, timing and solution scalability Supports upgrades, enhancements, testing, validation and overall system performance; leads product update process, including interface with external testing providers, conducts regression testing and develops contingency planning for larger project efforts Generates and maintains a variety of reports, queries and dashboards using appropriate Adaptive Planning /FIN/Payroll tools Works directly with end users to train on existing reports and dashboard and help end users obtain the operational and strategic information that they need from an Adaptive Planning/FIN/Payroll perspective Partners with data analysts in different parts of the University (HR, Office of Institutional Effectiveness, Registrar, Admission, Financial Aid, etc.) to ensure that administrative data ecosystem is robust, aligned, and that reporting and analysis across platforms and data domains provides the most effective and efficient environment for data-informed decision making at the institution Exposure to Workday Security Administration is a plus but not required Other Duties/projects as required
Supervision Exercised
Provides training and problem-solving assistance to other Business Affairs and Information Services staff as needed Manages projects with technical & functional staff, consultants, and vendors May supervise student employees, interns, or volunteers
Working Conditions/Physical Effort
Occasionally work after hours and weekends as required to meet planned project deadlines and respond to unplanned outages Ability to participate in training sessions, presentations and meetings Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse and to handle other computer components/peripherals Travel between home and work and work-related destinations Travel (locally, regionally, and nationally) to professional conferences Lift and carry equipment weighing 40lbs without assistance

Ability to handle complex issues, influence and problem-solve Ability to effectively manage a heavy workload, competing priorities and tight deadlines Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to communicate with clarity, tact, and courtesy, and demonstrate judgment and discretion in the sharing of confidential and sensitive information Resourceful, flexible, and able to anticipate and resolve problems effectively, with a capacity for understanding the relationship of specific tasks to the broader operations and administrative functions Advanced spreadsheet, database and word processing skills, including understanding of relational databases A superb collaborator and communicator who can effectively translate business needs into technical and process solutions Proven ability to manage software initiatives of varying sizes and complexity and work closely with business and end users Knowledge of Finance, Accounting, Procurement, Grants, Budgeting, and Payroll related business processes Must be detail oriented with high degree of accuracy and can thrive in a fast-paced environment where multi-tasking and prioritizing is necessary Ability to work quickly and accurately under pressure and time constraints Demonstrated critical thinking and analytical skills Ability to apply systems knowledge to troubleshoot and analyze new issues Exceptional customer service skills Strong analytical skills - ability to identify key question, sources of best information, understand nuances, and present clear findings to specialist and non-specialist audiences
Education & Experience
Workday Professional Certification in one or more of the following: Workday domains: Financial Management (Contracts to Cash, Procure to Pay, And/Or Record to Report), Payroll (US), Adaptive Planning, Grants Management, Time Tracking, Security, Analytics and Reporting Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or Information Systems or another related field required Eight years of relevant Workday experience with at least one full deployment Workday project that included FIN, Payroll(US), Adaptive Planning, Workday Scheduling, and/or Strategic Sourcing Hands-on configuration experience in at least two or more of the following Workday modules: Financial Management, Payroll (US), Adaptive Planning, Strategic Sourcing, Workday Scheduling, Time Tracking, Security, Analytics and Reporting Strong process analysis experience in business system processes Experience in analyzing operational needs and anticipating ways in which technology or processes can offer improvements or transformation opportunities Exposure to Workday Security Administration preferred Experience teaching and supporting other members on the team, sharing knowledge freely and building up the team Prior experience in higher education preferred
