Overview
Police Officer (Lateral Police Officers Only) – City of Brooklyn Park, MN. Brooklyn Park Police Department is seeking lateral officers. The academy and field training process will be condensed based upon prior law enforcement experience. The department serves 109 sworn officers and emphasizes professionalism, integrity, and community partnership. Responsibilities
Enforce city ordinances, state and federal laws in a fair and uniform manner that promotes public safety and investigates violations according to department policies and procedures Pro-actively patrol assigned areas; recognize and resolve neighborhood issues impacting public safety and livability Initiate and foster positive community relationships with businesses, residents, and visitors Promote crime prevention awareness and effective prevention strategies Respond to emergency calls and traffic accidents; administer first aid Conduct searches of persons and places as required Make arrests and safely transport prisoners Maintain order at crime scenes, disturbances, or accidents; interview witnesses and interrogate suspects; collect and preserve evidence Use assigned equipment (firearms, vehicles, computers, radios, radar, etc.) safely and responsibly Communicate information using computers, radios, phones, email, and other technologies Prepare clear, accurate, and timely reports Testify and present evidence in criminal and civil proceedings Serve warrants, subpoenas, and orders as directed by the court system Perform duties to promote the department’s legitimacy and serve everyone in the community Contribute to the city’s initiative to enhance quality of life in Brooklyn Park Participate and assist in training or activities beyond routine police functions Performs other duties as assigned or apparent Minimum Qualifications
Be a United States citizen, or have lawful permanent residency, or completed the military naturalization process, or have a pending citizenship application Meets educational requirements or reciprocity standards of the Minnesota POST Board Must be a licensed MN Peace Officer or eligible to be licensed by Minnesota; eligible to be licensed requires completion of required training First aid certification (First Responder or higher) as recorded by the Minnesota EMS Regulatory Board or equivalent Possess a valid driver’s license Eligible to carry a firearm in Minnesota; reference MN Statute 624.713 Pass a drug test Physically, medically, emotionally, and psychologically fit for full police duty; fitness assessed after a conditional job offer Pass a background investigation with no bars to peace officer licensure in Minnesota No disqualifying convictions as defined by Minnesota Administrative Rule 6700.0700 Have at least one year of full-time experience as a police officer Must have successfully completed probation at current department No discipline resulting in loss of pay or benefits within the last year Desired Qualifications
Volunteer experience Experience working with youth, the disabled, the elderly, or with drug/alcohol intervention issues Second language fluency relevant to Brooklyn Park’s population Commitment to a healthy, ongoing fitness plan Bachelor’s degree or higher Experience in a public law enforcement agency serving a diverse population Additional Requirements
Applicants must successfully pass all selection process events, including a comprehensive background investigation, a psychological exam, a police officer physical abilities test, a medical exam, and a drug test. Police Officer Physical Abilities Test: Candidates offered a conditional job offer will undergo a WorkSteps test at NovaCare. More information is available at the League of Minnesota Cities website. Sign-on bonus: $5,000 for lateral officer candidates who have been employed as a full-time police officer within the last 12 months with at least one year of experience. $2,500 paid with first paycheck and $2,500 upon successful completion of field training. Anticipated 2025 wage for lateral candidates: $46.11 - $54.89 per hour ($95,908.80 - $114,171.20 per year). Time between steps shortened and a $1 shift differential for 6 p.m. – 6 a.m. Special consideration for prior assignments (e.g., SWAT, FTO, DT instructor) and other qualifications. Vacation: 48 hours of front-loaded vacation time; eligibility for vacation accrual with up to four years of prior service with department approval. Sick time: 40 hours of front-loaded sick time.
