University of Virginia
Assistant Research Professor
University of Virginia, Virginia, Minnesota, United States, 55792
The Center for Diabetes Technology at the University of Virginia School of Medicine is seeking a researcher/scientist to join our Center. The candidate should have a very strong commitment to improve the understanding of disease in persons with diabetes by promoting fundamental research and/or developing new diabetes technologies that will serve as the future basis for new preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. and a successful track record in translational and engineering research, with preference for the field of diabetes technology. The compensation and recruitment package will depend on the candidate’s qualifications. Salary is dependent upon qualifications and experience.
The Center is directed by Prof. Boris Kovatchev, PhD, a world-renowned researcher in the field of diabetes technology and data science. He is actively involved with Center projects and with the direction of all Center faculty. The Center’s Associate Director for Research is Prof. Marc Breton, PhD, a control engineer who developed some of the most advanced artificial pancreas (AP) algorithms to date. Prof. Sue Brown, MD, leads the clinical aspects of the Center’s work, including some of the largest randomized AP clinical trials in the World.
In particular, the Center successfully completed three pivotal trials aiming for regulatory clearance of a new AID System developed at the Center in different age groups, all published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Currently, the Center has NIH RO1 and UO1 grants and long-term industrial arrangements for type 1 and type 2 diabetes research. The Center is translational in nature, focusing on continuity from vision, to research, to execution of clinical trials - an approach that allows our faculty to experience all aspects of the development of viable therapies.
The Center has a significant association with the Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Pediatrics, the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, and the Schools of Engineering and Applied Science and Data Science. The primary appointment for the successful candidate will be with the Departments of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the School of Medicine.
The Center faculty will provide mentoring for an assistant researcher, leading towards independence in translational and engineering research. The position provides a unique opportunity to align the research interests with clinical translation in effort to implement state-of-the-art, evidence-based preventive strategies and treatment opportunities for persons with diabetes.
For further information regarding the Center please contact Dr. Boris Kovatchev.
