The College of Health Sciences at Sam Houston State University announces its search for an innovative leader with a record of academic accomplishment and organizational leadership to serve as Chair of the Department of Human Sciences.

Department Overview

Home to three undergraduate programs: Fashion Merchandising (100% online), Food Science and Nutrition, and Interior Design.

Offers a Master of Science in Dietetics, including a Dietetic Internship Program, housed at the SHSU campus in Conroe, TX starting Summer 2026.

Accreditations: Food Science and Nutrition and the MS/DI programs by ACEND; Interior Design by CIDA and NASAD.

Facilities located in the Margaret Lee Houston and Lee Drain buildings, with laboratories supporting programs.

Partnerships with the SHSU Food Pantry to serve the community.

Program Focus and Mission Human Sciences empowers students to enhance wellbeing and address human needs through holistic, experiential learning in areas such as the built environment, textiles, clothing, food, and nutrition. The department prepares future professionals to contribute to the health, safety, and welfare of individuals, families, and communities.

The College’s mission emphasizes immersive, community-engaged education, fostering inquiry, exploration, and real-world engagement to empower individuals and communities across East Texas, with a focus on student-centered learning, research, and healthcare outreach.

Position Responsibilities

Serve as the chief academic and administrative officer of the Department of Human Sciences.

Oversee programs of education, research, and service.

Enhance departmental relationships within the College of Health Sciences and the university.

Manage class scheduling, faculty and staff evaluations, budget, hiring, curricula, and policy adherence.

Participate as a member of the College’s leadership team, report to the Dean, and advocate for faculty development and mentorship.
