Department Chair/Associate or Full Professor of Primary Care and Clinical Medicine Position details pertain to leadership of the Department of Primary Care and Clinical Medicine at Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. This role is a non-tenured faculty leadership position reporting to the Dean and participating in Academic Leadership Council activities. Duties Performed in the Usual Course of the Job
The Chair is responsible for supervision and oversight of the Department of Primary Care and Clinical Medicine, including planning, directing and implementing college programs, policies and procedures, and developing curriculum that integrates various specialties in team-based learning environments. Responsibilities include leadership to promote collaboration, budget management, faculty recruitment and onboarding, evaluations, mentorship, teaching, and research. The Chair balances workload with faculty and staff career trajectories and supports advancement toward promotion and tenure where applicable, considering college, clinical enterprise, and student needs. Teaching includes clinical portions of systems courses and participation in labs where time allows. The Chair may participate in patient care in the SHSU Physician clinic and engage in university/community service and clinical outreach programs. The Chair should be comfortable with preclinical and clinical education, curriculum evaluation, and assessment methods, and possess strong clinical acumen and skills in osteopathic manipulative medicine. The position reports to the Dean and may lead one or more college or university committees with voting membership on the Academic Leadership Council and other committees as assigned. Additional responsibilities may include student recruitment, retention and placement, research and scholarly activity, and service to the department and community. Specific Responsibilities Administration – supervise and coordinate the department's academic and clinical mission, including planning, directing and implementing college programs and policies; assist in curriculum development for team-based, large and small group learning environments. Teaching – classroom, clinical sites, labs, course preparation, updating teaching materials, student advising, and supervision of internships or programs; maintain active teaching competencies. Advising – student advising on academic and career matters. Scholarly Activity – develop research programs, allocate resources, recruit faculty and student participation; involve in presentations and leadership for residency and conferences. Service – serve on departmental governing bodies and committees; foster collaboration with other departments and programs; work with other chairs to create a team environment for students and residents in campus and clinical sites. Clinical Care – provide high-quality patient care in the SHSU Physician’s Clinic and oversee clinical duties of departmental physicians, integrating teaching for undergraduate and graduate trainees. Organizational Interface – interact with professional bodies, participate in budget development, faculty development, and committee work; uphold SHSU and AOA ethics and policies; participate in interviews and required trainings. Educational Requirements For The Position Osteopathic physician who graduated from a COCA-accredited College of Osteopathic Medicine with an active license; board certified in a primary care specialty (AOA COCA requires primary board certification in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Pediatrics). Experience Required For The Position Minimum of five years' experience in teaching and academic leadership in a medical education setting; substantial record as an educator with experience in foundational medical education concepts; administrative experience in an academic setting and/or health delivery is preferred; experience with curricular design and instructional strategies; familiarity with team-based, flipped classroom, problem-based learning, distance education, and exam item writing (USMLE/COMLEX) is preferred. Other Requirements For The Position Team player with collaboration and strong organizational and communication skills; ability to manage budgets, plan strategically, and represent the COM publicly; competency with instructional technologies and multiple software systems; ability to lead projects and supervise people; flexibility to work with diverse teams.
